Indications

Minirin Melt 60 is used as a treatment for conditions like central diabetes insipidus, where the body doesn’t produce enough water-retaining hormone. Minirin Melt 60 is also used to manage increased urination and thirst that can happen after head trauma or pituitary surgery. However, Minirin Melt 60 is not effective for treating nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

Minirin Melt 60 is also used to treat primary bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), frequent urination at night (nocturia), and central diabetes insipidus.

Pharmacology

Minirin Melt 60 works by acting like a natural hormone called ADH. Minirin Melt 60 helps increase water absorption in the kidneys, which reduces urine production. Minirin Melt 60 is more powerful than ADH in improving clotting factor levels in people with hemophilia and a certain bleeding disorder. Minirin Melt 60 has a much weaker effect on raising blood pressure.

When Minirin Melt 60 binds to receptors in the kidney, Minirin Melt 60 stimulates a process that leads to more water channels being added, making the kidneys better at retaining water.

Dosage & Administration

Sublingual tablet: The dose varies for different patients with diabetes insipidus, but typically Minirin Melt 60 is between 120 micrograms and 720 micrograms per day. Adults and children usually start with 60 micrograms three times a day. The dose can be adjusted based on how the patient responds. Most people need between 60 and 120 micrograms three times a day.

Film-coated tablet: For adults and children, the starting dose is usually 0.05 mg (half of the 0.1 mg tablet) twice a day. This can be adjusted based on the patient’s needs. Most patients find the optimal dose to be between 0.1 mg and 0.8 mg per day, taken in divided doses.

Geriatric Use: Elderly patients, especially those with kidney problems, may need to have their dose carefully adjusted, as the drug is removed by the kidneys.

Interaction

Minirin Melt 60 should be used with caution if taken with other drugs that might increase the risk of water poisoning or low sodium levels (like certain antidepressants, painkillers, or epilepsy medications).

Contraindications

Minirin Melt 60 is not recommended for people who are allergic to any of its ingredients or who have serious kidney problems. Minirin Melt 60 should also not be used by people who have low sodium levels or a history of low sodium levels.

Side Effects

Some people may experience mild side effects like headaches, nausea, flushing, or mild stomach cramps, especially when using high doses. These usually go away when the dose is reduced.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There have been no controlled studies on nursing mothers. Minirin Melt 60 should be used with caution if you are breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

In rare cases, Minirin Melt 60 may cause low sodium levels, which can be serious if not treated. Minirin Melt 60’s important to monitor fluid intake and sodium levels. Minirin Melt 60 should be used cautiously in people with heart problems or high blood pressure, as Minirin Melt 60 can cause a slight increase in blood pressure at high doses.
