Indications
Norium 5 is used to prevent classic (with aura) and common (without aura) migraines. Norium 5 also treats vestibular vertigo, which is caused by a functional issue in the vestibular system. Norium 5 is used for Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), motion sickness, and for treating epilepsy that doesn’t respond to regular epilepsy treatments.
Pharmacology
Norium 5 is a derivative of cinnarizine and works as a calcium channel blocker. Norium 5 helps prevent too much calcium from entering the cells, which prevents calcium overload. Norium 5 doesn’t affect normal calcium levels in cells. Norium 5 also has some antihistamine and sedative effects. Norium 5 binds strongly to plasma proteins in the blood.
Dosage & Administration
Migraine Prophylaxis: Start with 10 mg at night for patients under 65 years, and 5 mg daily for patients older than 65 years. If side effects like depression or muscle problems happen, stop the treatment. If no improvement is seen after 2 months, stop the medication. For ongoing treatment, reduce to 5 days a week with two days off each week. After 6 months, stop the treatment and start again only if necessary.
Peripheral Vascular Disease: 10 mg twice daily, can increase up to 30 mg per day if needed.
Vertigo & Motion Sickness: 10-20 mg daily for adults and 5 mg daily for children over 40 kg.
Epileptic Seizures: 15-20 mg daily for adults and 5-10 mg daily for children as an additional treatment.
Interaction
Some women may experience galactorrhoea (milk production) while using oral contraceptives in the first two months of taking Norium 5. Other medications like Carbamazepine and Phenytoin can increase how quickly Norium 5 is broken down, so a higher dose might be needed.
Contraindications
Norium 5 should not be used by people who are allergic to Norium 5 or have a history of depression, Parkinson’s disease, or other movement disorders.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, tiredness, weight gain, and increased appetite. Some people may experience depression, especially women with a history of depression. Movement issues like muscle stiffness or shaking can occur, especially in older patients. Other less common effects include heartburn, nausea, stomach pain, trouble sleeping, anxiety, milk production, dry mouth, muscle aches, and skin rash.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Its safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been proven. If pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Norium 5.
Precautions & Warnings
Norium 5 can cause drowsiness, which can be made worse by alcohol or other medications that slow down the brain. Avoid driving or doing tasks that require full attention. Norium 5 is not meant to stop a migraine once Norium 5 starts, so don’t increase the dose if an attack happens. Norium 5 can cause movement or mood problems, especially in older patients. Use Norium 5 cautiously in these cases.
