Pharmacology

NovoMix 30 Penfill is a mixture of 30% Insulin Aspart and 70% Insulin Aspart Protamine. This insulin helps lower blood sugar with a quicker start and medium-lasting effect. NovoMix 30 Penfill works similarly to regular insulin, with one small change in its structure. NovoMix 30 Penfill is made using special technology with yeast. The main job of insulin, including Insulin Aspart, is to control how the body uses glucose. NovoMix 30 Penfill helps cells take in glucose and stops the liver from making too much. Insulin also helps in fat and protein storage and prevents the breakdown of fat and proteins.

Dosage & Administration

Subcutaneous Injection: NovoMix 30 Penfill should generally be taken 5-10 minutes before eating.

For Pumps: Change the insulin in the pump at least every 6 days, change the set and site every 3 days. NovoMix 30 Penfill should not be mixed with other insulins or diluents in the pump.

Intravenous Use: Use NovoMix 30 Penfill in concentrations from 0.05 U/mL to 1.0 U/mL in infusion bags. NovoMix 30 Penfill is stable in fluids like 0.9% sodium chloride.

Interaction

Some medications can change how insulin works and might need a dose adjustment. Certain medications can increase insulin’s blood sugar-lowering effect, while others can decrease NovoMix 30 Penfill. Medications like oral anti-diabetics, ACE inhibitors, and certain antibiotics may change insulin effects. Medications like corticosteroids, diuretics, and some birth control pills may weaken the effect of insulin. Alcohol and some psychiatric drugs can have unpredictable effects.

Contraindications

NovoMix 30 Penfill is not recommended for use during episodes of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or in patients allergic to Insulin Aspart or any ingredients in the medication.

Side Effects

Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), changes in skin under the injection site (lipodystrophy), weight gain, and swelling of the body (edema).

Pregnancy & Lactation

NovoMix 30 Penfill is considered safe during pregnancy, but blood sugar control must be closely monitored. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, tell your doctor. Lactating women may need adjustments to their insulin dose, as NovoMix 30 Penfill’s unknown if insulin aspart passes into breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings

Blood sugar levels should be checked regularly. Insulin doses should only be adjusted under a doctor’s supervision. Those with kidney or liver issues may need a reduced dose.

Overdose Effects

Overdose can cause low blood sugar. Mild cases can be treated with sugary food or drinks. Severe cases may need an injection of glucagon or intravenous glucose.
