Indications
Olmetor 10 is used to treat high blood pressure. Olmetor 10 can be taken alone or with other medications to lower blood pressure.
Pharmacology
Angiotensin II is made from angiotensin I by an enzyme called ACE. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to tighten, increases the release of aldosterone, and helps the kidneys hold onto sodium. Olmesartan blocks these effects by stopping angiotensin II from binding to the AT 1 receptor in blood vessels. Olmetor 10 does not block ACE and does not affect bradykinin. By blocking the angiotensin II receptor, Olmesartan helps lower blood pressure without causing a rise in angiotensin II levels.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: The usual starting dose is 20 mg once a day. If more reduction in blood pressure is needed after 2 weeks, the dose can be increased to 40 mg. Doses above 40 mg do not provide more benefit. Twice-daily dosing is not more effective than a single dose.
For elderly or patients with kidney or liver problems: No initial dose adjustment is needed, but Olmetor 10 should be taken carefully under medical supervision. Start with a lower dose if necessary, especially if you are also taking diuretics.
Paediatric patients: Safety and effectiveness for children have not been proven.
Olmetor 10 can be taken with or without food.
Interaction
No major interactions were found with digoxin or warfarin. The absorption of Olmesartan is not affected by antacids. Olmetor 10 does not interact with the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. However, NSAIDs (like aspirin) and COX-2 inhibitors can affect kidney function when taken with Olmesartan, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients. Monitor kidney function if using both.
Contraindications
Olmetor 10 should not be used by individuals who are allergic to any of its components.
Side Effects
Olmetor 10 is generally well tolerated. Some common side effects include dizziness, back pain, headache, bronchitis, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms. Dizziness was the most frequent side effect in trials. Serious side effects are rare, but some may experience an increase in blood sugar or triglycerides.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Olmetor 10 should be discontinued as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. During pregnancy, Olmetor 10 can harm the developing baby, especially in the second and third trimesters. Olmetor 10 is not known if Olmetor 10 passes into breast milk, but Olmetor 10 has been detected in low amounts in rat milk. Consider stopping breastfeeding or discontinuing the drug based on its importance to the mother.
Precautions & Warnings
People with kidney issues or heart problems that rely on the renin-angiotensin system should use this medication with caution. Olmetor 10 may cause kidney problems or low blood pressure, especially in people who are dehydrated or have severe heart failure.
Overdose Effects
Overdosing may cause low blood pressure and rapid heart rate. In severe cases, bradycardia (slow heart rate) may occur. If an overdose happens, medical help should be sought immediately. Treatments may include stomach pumping and fluid management to stabilize blood pressure.
