Indications
Olsart Plus 40 is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
Pharmacology
Olsart Plus 40 works by blocking the effects of a hormone called angiotensin-II, which normally narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure. Olmesartan blocks the effects of this hormone by binding to its receptors in blood vessels and other tissues. Olsart Plus 40 also helps lower blood pressure and reduces the secretion of aldosterone, which controls fluid balance.
The second component, Hydrochlorothiazide, is a type of diuretic (water pill) that helps the body remove excess salt and water. Olsart Plus 40 works by increasing the amount of sodium and chloride excreted by the kidneys, which reduces the overall blood volume and helps lower blood pressure. This medication also increases aldosterone and potassium loss, but Olmesartan helps reduce potassium loss.
Dosage & Administration
Hypertension: The typical starting dose is 20/12.5 mg once a day. Depending on how the blood pressure responds, the dose can be increased every 2 to 4 weeks to 40/25 mg once daily.
Interaction
Olmesartan: There are no significant drug interactions with Hydrochlorothiazide, digoxin, or warfarin. Olmesartan does not interact with the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, so Olsart Plus 40 does not affect other drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
Hydrochlorothiazide: Some drugs may interact with this diuretic, including alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics (which may cause low blood pressure), antidiabetic drugs (which may need dosage adjustment), other antihypertensive drugs (which may increase the effect), corticosteroids, ACTH, and lithium.
Contraindications
Olsart Plus 40 is not recommended for people who are allergic to any of its components, or for those with no urine production (anuria) or hypersensitivity to sulfonamide drugs.
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, headache, dizziness, high uric acid levels, respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections. Other possible side effects are chest pain, back pain, swelling in the legs, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, and gastroenteritis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been established. Olsart Plus 40 is advised to stop taking the medication during these periods unless specifically instructed by your doctor.
Precautions & Warnings
Regular testing of blood electrolytes is recommended to detect potential imbalances, such as low potassium, sodium, or chloride levels. Olsart Plus 40 is also important to monitor uric acid levels as they may rise with thiazide therapy. Patients with kidney problems should use this medication cautiously.
Overdose Effects
For Olmesartan, the most common overdose symptoms are low blood pressure and a fast heartbeat. Treatment should focus on supportive care.
For Hydrochlorothiazide, overdose can cause electrolyte imbalances such as low potassium or chloride levels and dehydration. If digitalis (a heart medication) is also taken, low potassium levels may worsen heart rhythm problems.
Therapeutic Class
Olsart Plus 40 is a combined treatment for high blood pressure (antihypertensive preparation).
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
