Indications

Omaglo is used to treat adults with type 2 diabetes.

Pharmacology

Omaglo is a long-acting medicine that works by blocking the DPP-4 enzyme. DPP-4 breaks down hormones that help lower blood sugar. These hormones, called incretins, help reduce blood sugar levels after eating by increasing insulin and decreasing glucagon. By blocking DPP-4, Omaglo helps incretin hormones work better to control blood sugar.

Dosage & Administration

Route of administration: Take Omaglo by mouth.

Recommended dosage: The usual dose is 25 mg once a week, either alone or along with other medicines to control blood sugar. If a dose is missed, take Omaglo as soon as possible, then continue with the regular weekly schedule. Never take two doses at once.

Renal impairment: For patients with severe kidney problems or those on dialysis, the dose should be reduced to 12.5 mg once a week. This is based on kidney function.

Use in children and adolescents: Its safety and effectiveness for children and adolescents have not been established.

Interaction

Omaglo may interact with medicines like metformin, glimepiride, oral contraceptives, and atorvastatin. Caution is needed when used with other anti-diabetic drugs (like insulin or sulfonylureas) as they may cause low blood sugar. Omaglo should also be used carefully with drugs that increase the risk of low blood sugar (such as beta-blockers, salicylic acid, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors). Blood sugar should be monitored when used with drugs that reduce the effect of low blood sugar (like adrenaline or thyroid hormones).

Contraindications

Omaglo is not suitable for people who are allergic to Omaglo or any of its ingredients. Omaglo should not be used in patients with severe ketosis, diabetic coma, or precoma, or in type 1 diabetes patients. Omaglo is also not recommended for severe infections, before or after surgery, or in patients with serious trauma.

Side Effects

The side effects are usually mild and well-tolerated. Common side effects include a sore throat, low blood sugar, constipation, diarrhea, stomach issues, and skin problems.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Omaglo has not been tested in pregnant women. Omaglo should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks to the baby. Breastfeeding mothers should avoid using Omaglo.

Precautions & Warnings

Omaglo should be used carefully in patients who may develop low blood sugar, such as those with pituitary or adrenal problems, poor nutrition, lack of food, excessive alcohol use, or the elderly. Special care should also be taken for people working at heights or driving vehicles.

Overdose Effects

There is no information available on overdosing with Omaglo. If overdose occurs, supportive care should be given.

Therapeutic Class

Omaglo belongs to the class of medicines called Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors.

Storage Conditions

Store Omaglo in a cool (below 30°C), dry place away from light. Keep Omaglo out of reach of children.
