Generic Name: Lomefloxacin 0.3% Eye or Ear prep
Company: ACI Limited

Is Antibiotic: Yes
Indications
Omeflox ED is used to treat bacterial infections such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis caused by bacteria that are sensitive to Lomefloxacin, as well as corneal ulcers caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
Pharmacology
Lomefloxacin is a type of quinolone antibiotic that works by stopping the bacteria from reproducing. Omeflox ED helps treat infections caused by both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Lomefloxacin is effective because Omeflox ED interferes with bacterial DNA processes, making Omeflox ED difficult for bacteria to grow and reproduce. Omeflox ED targets a specific enzyme in bacteria, causing them to die quickly. Omeflox ED is generally safe for use in the eyes, with low toxicity when applied topically.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and children (above 1 year): Instill 1 drop into the lower conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily. At the beginning of the treatment, the application should be more frequent, with 5 drops applied within 20 minutes or 1 drop every hour for the first 6-10 hours. The total duration of the treatment should be 7 to 9 days.
Interaction
To avoid reducing its effectiveness, do not use ophthalmic preparations that contain heavy metals like zinc within 15 minutes before or after using Lomefloxacin. Bacteriostatic eye antibiotics should not be used at the same time as Lomefloxacin eye drops.
Contraindications
Omeflox ED should not be used by people who are allergic to the active ingredient, any of the other ingredients, or quinolones. Long-term use of antibiotics may lead to secondary fungal infections or allow growth of bacteria that are not sensitive to the medication.
Side Effects
Some people may feel a mild and temporary burning sensation right after using the eye drops. Though phototoxicity has not been reported from using the eye drops, there is still a chance of photosensitivity. Other allergic reactions that may occur include asthma, difficulty breathing, hives, redness, itching, and sensitivity to the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Animal studies have shown that Lomefloxacin can pass through the placenta and into breast milk. There are no clinical studies on the use of Lomefloxacin eye drops during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Omeflox ED should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks for the baby or fetus.
Precautions & Warnings
While no cases of phototoxicity have been reported with the eye drops, some people have experienced Omeflox ED after using the medication systemically. Therefore, Omeflox ED is important to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV rays while using this medication.
Overdose Effects
There is little risk of harmful effects if the medication is accidentally swallowed, as the amount in a 5 ml bottle of eye drops is much smaller than the recommended oral dose for adults.
Therapeutic Class
Omeflox ED is an ophthalmic antibacterial drug in the 4-quinolone class.
Storage Conditions
Store Omeflox ED between 15-25°C.
