Indications
OMG-3 is used as an addition to diet to lower very high triglyceride (TG) levels in adults and to help prevent further heart attacks in patients who have had one in the last 3 months. OMG-3 is also used to reduce joint inflammation in mild arthritis, help with mood disorders and impulse control, and slow down age-related vision loss.
Pharmacology
OMG-3 works by lowering triglyceride production in the liver, although the exact way OMG-3 does this is not fully understood. OMG-3 reduces the creation of triglycerides and helps the body burn fat more efficiently. OMG-3 also helps clear triglycerides from the body and decreases the production of bad cholesterol.
Dosage & Administration
For high triglyceride levels: Take 4 capsules (4 gm) as a single dose, or 2 capsules (2 gm) twice a day.
For people who had a heart attack: Take 1 capsule (1 gm) daily with food. A healthy diet should be followed along with this treatment.
For joint inflammation: Take 2.7 gm daily.
For mood disorders and age-related vision problems: Take 1 capsule (1 gm) daily, or as directed by a doctor.
Interaction
OMG-3 can be safely used with warfarin (a blood thinner) without causing bleeding issues, but regular monitoring of blood clotting time (prothrombin time) is needed when using both together.
Contraindications
OMG-3 should not be used by anyone who is allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication.

Immune system: Rare – allergic reactions.
Metabolism: Uncommon – high blood sugar, gout.
Nervous system: Uncommon – dizziness, taste changes, headaches.
Vascular: Uncommon – low blood pressure.
Respiratory: Uncommon – nosebleeds.
Gastrointestinal: Common – stomach problems (such as pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, bloating). Uncommon – bleeding in the stomach.
Liver: Rare – liver problems (such as elevated liver enzymes).
Skin: Uncommon – rash. Rare – hives.
Pregnancy & Lactation
OMG-3 should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the baby. OMG-3 is unknown if OMG-3 passes into breast milk, so caution is advised when giving OMG-3 to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients on blood thinners need to be carefully monitored, especially when taking higher doses (4 capsules). The medication may slightly increase bleeding time, but OMG-3 does not cause serious bleeding problems in most cases. Children should not use this medication unless advised by a doctor. Liver function should be checked in patients using higher doses.
