Indications
Oniz is used to treat amoebiasis (intestinal and liver infection), giardiasis, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, and infections caused by certain bacteria that do not need oxygen to grow.
Pharmacology
Oniz is a medication that works against specific parasites and bacteria that do not need oxygen. Once inside the body, Oniz is changed into active forms that damage the DNA of the harmful organisms, stopping their ability to reproduce and causing their death.
Dosage & Administration
Amoebiasis: Adults: 500 mg twice a day for 5 days. Children: 10-25 mg per kg body weight in two doses.
Amoebic Dysentery: Adults: 1.5 gm once a day for 3 days. Children: 40 mg per kg body weight, once a day for 3 days.
Giardiasis: Adults: 1.5 gm once daily for 1-2 days. Children: 40 mg per kg body weight for 2 days.
Trichomoniasis: 1.5 gm once or 500 mg twice a day for 5 days. Treat sexual partner at the same time.
Bacterial Vaginosis: 3 tablets of 500 mg each as a single dose or one tablet of 500 mg once daily for 5-7 days.
Interaction
Oniz can cause reactions similar to disulfiram when taken with alcohol. If taken with blood-thinning medications, Oniz may increase the risk of bleeding. Oniz can also reduce the effectiveness of some cancer medications, such as 5-fluorouracil.
Contraindications
Oniz should not be used by people who are allergic to Oniz or other similar medications. Oniz is also not suitable for people with brain disorders like epilepsy or nerve damage.
Side Effects
Side effects are mostly related to the stomach (such as nausea, vomiting, and pain) and the brain (like dizziness, headaches, and tiredness). Some people may experience a low white blood cell count. However, Oniz does not usually cause severe nervous system effects like other similar medications.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is not enough research to fully understand the risks, so Oniz should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks to the baby.
Precautions & Warnings
If you have issues with balance, dizziness, or confusion, Oniz should be used with caution. Long-term use may lead to a mild decrease in white blood cells. If this occurs, the decision to stop the treatment will depend on how serious the infection is.
Overdose Effects
Not applicable.
Therapeutic Class
Oniz is classified as an amoebicide, anti-diarrhoeal, and antiprotozoal medication.
Storage Conditions
Store at room temperature, away from light and moisture.
