Indications

Opanac is used for treating post-surgery eye pain and swelling, including after cataract surgery. Opanac also helps stop the pupil from becoming too small during surgery and prevents swelling in the eye after surgery.

Pharmacology

Opanac is a type of anti-inflammatory drug that works by being absorbed into the eye and then turned into another active ingredient called Amfenac. This substance works by blocking an enzyme in the body that is necessary for making certain chemicals (prostaglandins) that cause inflammation.

Dosage & Administration

For post-surgery pain & swelling (0.1% version): Put 1 drop in the eye 3 times a day starting the day before cataract surgery, and continue for the first 2 weeks after surgery.

For stopping pupil shrinkage during surgery (0.1% version): Put 1 drop in the eye 3 times a day starting the day before surgery, and on the day of surgery.

For preventing eye swelling after surgery (0.1% version): Put 1 drop in the eye 3 times a day starting the day before surgery, and continue for 6 weeks after surgery.

For post-surgery pain & swelling (0.3% version): Put 1 drop in the eye once a day starting the day before cataract surgery, and continue for 2 weeks after surgery. An additional drop should be used 30 to 120 minutes before surgery.

Contraindications

Opanac should not be used by people who are allergic to any of the ingredients or to other anti-inflammatory drugs.

Side Effects

Common side effects include feeling like there’s something in the eye, crusting at the eyelid, discomfort in the eye, and redness of the eye.

Pregnancy & Lactation

If pregnant, consult a doctor before using Opanac. Opanac should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh any potential risks to the baby.

Opanac’s not known if this medicine passes into breast milk, so caution is advised if being used by a nursing mother.

Precautions & Warnings

Opanac should be used carefully by people who have bleeding disorders or take medications that could cause bleeding.
