Indications
Oxapro 10 is used to treat major depressive episodes, panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Pharmacology
Oxapro 10 is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that is taken by mouth. Oxapro 10 is the pure S-enantiomer of citalopram and is more potent than its counterpart. Oxapro 10 primarily works by blocking serotonin reuptake, with little effect on other receptors such as dopamine, histamine, and muscarinic receptors.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: Usually, a dose of 10 mg once a day is recommended. Depending on response, the dose may increase to a maximum of 20 mg daily. Treatment for major depression may require at least 6 months after symptoms improve.
Panic Disorder: Start with 5 mg for the first week, then increase to 10 mg daily. The dose may go up to 20 mg depending on individual response. Treatment generally lasts several months.
Social Anxiety Disorder: Start with 10 mg once daily. After 2-4 weeks, the dose may be adjusted between 5 mg to 20 mg daily, based on response. Long-term treatment for up to 12 weeks or longer may be necessary to prevent relapse.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Begin with 10 mg daily, which may increase to 20 mg depending on response. Treatment for at least 6 months is recommended for long-term benefit.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Start with 10 mg daily and increase to a maximum of 20 mg daily, based on response. Long-term treatment is advised to ensure the symptoms do not return.
Interaction
Oxapro 10 should not be used within two weeks of stopping a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), and an MAOI should not be started until at least a week after stopping this medication.
Contraindications
Oxapro 10 is not suitable for patients who are allergic to Escitalopram, Citalopram, or any of its ingredients. Oxapro 10 should not be taken alongside monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or pimozide.
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, and appetite changes. Some people may experience dizziness, anxiety, dry mouth, headache, insomnia, or sexual problems. Rarely, more serious effects like hallucinations or seizures may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
During pregnancy, the potential risks and benefits should be carefully considered. Oxapro 10 is also excreted in breast milk, so the decision to continue treatment or breastfeeding should be discussed with a doctor.
Precautions & Warnings
Oxapro 10 should be used carefully in patients with epilepsy, heart conditions, diabetes, or glaucoma. Caution is also needed in those with a history of bleeding disorders or liver and kidney problems.
Overdose Effects
Overdose symptoms may include dizziness, tremors, nausea, vomiting, changes in heart rate, and seizures. Immediate medical attention is needed. There is no specific antidote, but supportive treatment should be provided.
