Indications
Paloron 0.5 is used to treat schizophrenia, including both the treatment of acute episodes and preventing future episodes. Paloron 0.5 is also used to treat schizoaffective disorder either alone or with other medications such as antidepressants or mood stabilizers.
Pharmacology
Paloron 0.5 is a psychotropic drug in the benzisoxazole class, and Paloron 0.5 is the active form of Risperidone. Paloron 0.5 works mainly by blocking dopamine receptors (D2) and serotonin receptors (5-HT2A). Paloron 0.5 also affects alpha-adrenergic receptors (α1 and α2) and histamine (H1) receptors. However, Paloron 0.5 does not interact with cholinergic muscarinic or adrenergic beta receptors.
Dosage & Administration
Schizophrenia:
Adults: Start with 6 mg/day. The recommended dose is between 3-12 mg/day, with a maximum of 12 mg/day.
Adolescents (Weight < 51 kg): Start with 3 mg/day. The recommended dose is 3-6 mg/day, with a maximum of 6 mg/day.
Adolescents (Weight ≥ 51 kg): Start with 3 mg/day. The recommended dose is 3-12 mg/day, with a maximum of 12 mg/day.
Schizoaffective Disorder: Adults: Start with 6 mg/day. The recommended dose is between 3-12 mg/day, with a maximum of 12 mg/day.
Interaction
Paloron 0.5 is advised to be cautious when taking Paloron 0.5 with other central nervous system (CNS) drugs or alcohol. Paloron 0.5 may reduce the effectiveness of Levodopa and other dopamine agonists. Paloron 0.5 can also cause low blood pressure when combined with other drugs that have the same effect.
If taken with strong CYP3A4/P-glycoprotein inducers (like carbamazepine), the dose of Paloron 0.5 may need to be increased. On stopping the strong inducers, the dose of Paloron 0.5 may need to be reduced.
Taking Paloron 0.5 with divalproex sodium may increase its levels in the body by about 50%, so the dose may need adjustment.
Contraindications
There are no specific contraindications for this medication.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Paloron 0.5 include fast heart rate, restlessness, drowsiness, shaking, muscle stiffness, anxiety, weight gain, upset stomach, constipation, and sore throat. In some cases, people may also experience allergic reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Paloron 0.5 is classified as Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate studies in pregnant women, so Paloron 0.5 should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks. Paloron 0.5 is found in human breast milk, so the benefits of breastfeeding should be considered against the unknown risks of infant exposure.
Precautions & Warnings
Paloron 0.5 should be used with caution in patients with heart problems, long QT syndrome, or a history of neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Other conditions that require caution include tardive dyskinesia, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, obesity, high prolactin levels, low white blood cell count, seizures, and cognitive or motor impairment.
Overdose Effects
If an overdose occurs, there is no specific antidote for Paloron 0.5. General supportive care should be provided, and symptoms should be treated as they arise.
