Indications
Peflon is used in adults to treat infections caused by one or more harmful microorganisms. Peflon is also useful for infections that don’t respond to other antibiotics. Peflon is indicated for the following conditions:
- Gastrointestinal infection: Enteric fever, acute bacterial diarrhea, and chronic Salmonella carriers.
- Urinary tract infection: Cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, epididymitis, and urethritis.
- Respiratory tract infection: Pneumonia, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and empyema.
- Ear, nose, and throat infection: Otitis media, otitis externa, sinusitis, and tonsillitis.
- Bone and joint infection: Osteomyelitis and arthritis.
- Skin and soft tissue infection: Infected ulcers, wounds, abscesses, cellulitis, erysipelas, and infected burns.
- Pelvic infection: Salpingitis, endometritis, and pelvic peritonitis.
- Abdominal and hepatobiliary infection: Peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess, cholangitis, cholecystitis, and gall bladder empyema.
- Also used for septicemia, bacteraemia, gonorrhoea, endocarditis, and meningitis.
Pharmacology
Peflon is a synthetic antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone group. Peflon works by blocking a part of DNA called DNA gyrase, which helps bacteria grow. Peflon kills bacteria and has a wide range of effects on different types of bacteria.
Dosage & Administration
Adults with normal liver function: Take one 400 mg tablet twice a day (morning and evening) with food to avoid stomach issues. A higher dose of 800 mg may be used initially to quickly reach the right blood levels.
Adults with liver problems: For those with severe liver issues or poor blood supply to the liver, the dose intervals should be increased. No adjustment is needed for kidney problems.
Duration of Treatment
Treatment usually lasts 5 to 10 days. For certain conditions, such as chronic prostatitis, cystic fibrosis, or Salmonella, treatment may last 14 days. For endocarditis, Peflon may last up to 6 months. Chronic osteomyelitis can be treated for up to 1 year. For gonorrhoea, a single dose of 2 tablets is required.
Interaction
Taking Peflon with antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium can reduce its effectiveness. Peflon is best to avoid taking these medications together.
Contraindications
Peflon is not recommended for people who are allergic to quinolone drugs, children under 15 years old, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with a deficiency in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, or those with a history of tendon problems like tendonitis or tendon rupture.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include stomach issues such as pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or indigestion. Peflon may also cause headaches, trouble sleeping, skin reactions like rashes, sensitivity to sunlight, muscle or joint pain, and tendon problems, including tendonitis or tendon rupture.
Pregnancy & Lactation
If pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult a doctor before using this medication. Peflon should be avoided during the first trimester unless iron deficiency is confirmed. Peflon is safe to use later in pregnancy if needed for iron supplementation.
Precautions & Warnings
To prevent skin reactions, avoid direct sunlight and UV radiation during treatment. For patients with severe liver problems, the dose should be adjusted. If pain occurs in the Achilles tendon, treatment should be stopped immediately.
