Indications
Pregaba 100 is used for the treatment of neuropathic pain caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, and pain related to spinal cord injury. Pregaba 100 is also used as additional therapy for partial-onset seizures in patients 1 month or older, and for fibromyalgia.
Pharmacology
Pregaba 100 is derived from gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Pregaba 100 does not bind to GABA receptors but attaches to a specific site on calcium channels in the brain. This action is believed to help reduce pain and seizures, though the exact mechanism is not fully known.
Dosage & Administration
For neuropathic pain: The dose starts at 50 mg three times a day, which can be increased to 100 mg three times a day after one week. The maximum dose is 300 mg per day.
For postherpetic neuralgia: Start with 75 mg twice a day or 50 mg three times a day, which can be increased to 300 mg per day in a week.
For fibromyalgia: The dose begins at 75 mg twice a day and may increase to 300-450 mg per day, based on the patient’s response.
For spinal cord injury pain: Start with 75 mg twice a day, and the dose may be increased to 150-300 mg per day.
Conversion to controlled release form: When switching from regular Pregabalin to the controlled release form, the morning dose remains the same, and the controlled release capsule should be taken in the evening after a meal.
Interaction
Pregabalin is unlikely to cause significant drug interactions. There are no known major interactions with food or other substances.
Contraindications
Pregaba 100 is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to Pregabalin or any of its components.
Side Effects
Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, swelling, blurred vision, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating. In children, the most common side effects are increased weight and appetite.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnant women should consult their doctor before using this medication, as its effects on the fetus are not well studied. Small amounts may pass into breast milk, so breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
Precautions & Warnings
Pregabalin can cause serious allergic reactions like swelling of the throat, and should be stopped if this happens. Pregaba 100 may also increase the risk of suicidal thoughts. Use with caution in patients with respiratory problems, as Pregaba 100 can cause breathing difficulties. Pregaba 100 can impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. Dosing should be gradual to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Overdose Effects
In case of overdose, symptoms may include drowsiness, confusion, agitation, seizures, and heart problems. There is no specific antidote, so supportive care and monitoring are necessary.
