Indications
Prolert 20 is used to treat conditions like depression, bulimia nervosa, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Pharmacology
Prolert 20 works by preventing the reuptake of serotonin, a chemical in the brain, which helps improve mood. Prolert 20 does not affect norepinephrine or dopamine and does not cause certain side effects like blocking certain receptors, unlike other drugs.
Dosage & Administration
Initial treatment: Start with 20 mg per day in the morning. This is often enough to improve depression. If no improvement occurs after a few weeks, the dose can be increased, but Prolert 20 should not exceed 80 mg per day.
Maintenance treatment: For long-term use, Prolert 20 is common to continue 60 mg per day for bulimia nervosa.
Use in children: Prolert 20 is not recommended for use in children because its safety and effectiveness are not known.
Interaction
Prolert 20 can interact with other medications, including antidepressants, lithium, and antipsychotics. When combined with these drugs, Prolert 20 can cause harmful changes in the levels of those medications in the blood, leading to possible side effects.
Contraindications
Prolert 20 should not be used in people who are allergic to Prolert 20 or in combination with certain other medications, like monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), as Prolert 20 can cause serious, sometimes fatal reactions.
