Indications

Prolert is used to treat conditions like depression, bulimia nervosa, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Prolert works by preventing the reuptake of serotonin, a chemical in the brain, which helps improve mood. Prolert does not affect norepinephrine or dopamine and does not cause certain side effects like blocking certain receptors, unlike other drugs.

Dosage & Administration

Initial treatment: Start with 20 mg per day in the morning. This is often enough to improve depression. If no improvement occurs after a few weeks, the dose can be increased, but Prolert should not exceed 80 mg per day.

Maintenance treatment: For long-term use, Prolert is common to continue 60 mg per day for bulimia nervosa.

Use in children: Prolert is not recommended for use in children because its safety and effectiveness are not known.

Interaction

Prolert can interact with other medications, including antidepressants, lithium, and antipsychotics. When combined with these drugs, Prolert can cause harmful changes in the levels of those medications in the blood, leading to possible side effects.

Contraindications

Prolert should not be used in people who are allergic to Prolert or in combination with certain other medications, like monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), as Prolert can cause serious, sometimes fatal reactions.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, and diarrhea. Prolert may also cause anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, drowsiness, and fatigue. Rarely, Prolert can cause skin rashes, and if this happens, Prolert should be discontinued.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Prolert should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary, as Prolert has not been proven safe in humans. Prolert can pass into breast milk, so caution should be exercised when Prolert is used by nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Prolert should be used carefully in patients with liver or kidney problems, and those with a history of seizures. Diabetic patients should also be monitored closely, as Prolert may affect blood sugar levels. People with bipolar disorder should avoid using Prolert, as Prolert may cause mania.
