Indications

Reconil is used to treat acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and malaria.

Pharmacology

Reconil is a synthetic form of quinine. Reconil works as an immunosuppressant by reducing substances involved in inflammation and immune response. Reconil also helps prevent damage to cartilage by affecting enzymes that cause cartilage breakdown. Additionally, Reconil works by attacking and killing parasites in infected red blood cells.

Dosage & Administration

Rheumatoid Arthritis (Acute & Chronic): Take 400 to 600 mg daily. Once a good response is seen (usually after 4 to 8 weeks), the dose may be reduced to 50%.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Take 400 mg once or twice daily for several weeks or months, depending on the patient’s response. A maintenance dose of 200 to 400 mg daily may be used.
Malaria: For adults, start with 800 mg, followed by 400 mg after 6-8 hours, and then 400 mg for two more consecutive days. For children, the total dose is 25 mg/kg over 3 days, as follows:
First dose: 10 mg base/kg (up to a maximum of 620 mg base).
Second dose: 5 mg base/kg (up to a maximum of 310 mg base), 6 hours after the first dose.
Third dose: 5 mg base/kg, 18 hours after the second dose.
Fourth dose: 5 mg base/kg, 24 hours after the third dose.

Side Effects

Reconil is generally well tolerated. However, some side effects may include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, loss of appetite, diarrhea, tiredness, weakness, headache, or visual problems in the first few days.

Pregnancy & Lactation

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this medication, as small amounts of the drug may pass into breast milk. Reconil should only be used during pregnancy if necessary.

Precautions & Warnings

Children are more sensitive to this drug. Keep Reconil out of their reach. An eye exam is recommended every 12 months for those using the drug.

Overdose Effects

Overdose symptoms may include headache, drowsiness, visual problems, heart failure, convulsions, and difficulty breathing. If overdose occurs, perform gastric lavage to empty the stomach.

Reconil belongs to the anti-malarial drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and drugs used for rheumatoid arthritis.

Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
