Indications
Relentus is used to treat painful muscle spasms related to spine issues (cervical and lumbar conditions) and after surgery, like for herniated discs or hip osteoarthritis. Relentus also helps with spasticity from neurological problems, such as multiple sclerosis, spinal cord diseases, strokes, and cerebral palsy.
Pharmacology
Relentus is a muscle relaxant that works mainly on the spinal cord. Relentus helps reduce muscle tone by blocking the release of certain chemicals that cause muscle tightness. Besides relaxing muscles, Relentus also has a mild pain-relieving effect.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: Start with 2 mg three times a day to reduce side effects. The dose can be increased based on individual needs.
Painful muscle spasms: Typically, the dose is 2 to 4 mg three times a day. In severe cases, an extra dose may be taken at night.
Spasticity: Begin with a daily dose of 6 mg in 3 doses, gradually increasing Relentus to 12-24 mg per day. Do not exceed 36 mg daily.
Pediatric patients: Relentus is not recommended for children under 18 years.
Geriatric patients: Start with the lowest dose and increase gradually based on how the elderly patient responds.
Renal impairment: Start at 2 mg once daily and adjust based on response.
Hepatic impairment: Should not be used in patients with severe liver problems. If used in those with moderate liver issues, start with the lowest dose and increase cautiously.
Discontinuation: If stopping, gradually reduce the dose to avoid side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate.
Interaction
Taking Relentus with drugs that affect the liver enzyme CYP1A2 may increase or decrease its levels, affecting its effectiveness. Certain drugs like fluvoxamine and ciprofloxacin should not be taken with Relentus due to serious side effects. Alcohol and sedatives can increase drowsiness and other side effects.
Contraindications
Relentus should not be used in people allergic to Relentus or with severe liver problems. Relentus is also not safe to take with certain medications that affect the CYP1A2 enzyme, such as fluvoxamine or ciprofloxacin.
Side Effects
Common side effects at lower doses include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea. At higher doses, effects like low blood pressure, heart problems, muscle weakness, and liver issues may occur. Most side effects are mild and go away with time.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Relentus should not be used during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, as there is limited data. Relentus may also pass into breast milk, so Relentus is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution is needed when using Relentus with other medications that affect the heart or blood pressure. Relentus should be used carefully in people with liver problems and monitored closely for side effects.
Overdose Effects
Overdose may cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, and even coma. Immediate medical attention is needed.
Therapeutic Class
Relentus is a muscle relaxant used for treating muscle spasms and spasticity.
Storage Conditions
