Indications

Semglee is used to help control blood sugar in adults and children with type 1 diabetes and in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Pharmacology

Semglee is a form of insulin given as an injection. Semglee is made to last up to 24 hours and works by helping the body use sugar. Semglee lowers blood sugar by helping the muscles and fat cells take in sugar and stops the liver from making too much sugar. Semglee also prevents the breakdown of fats and proteins while helping the body build proteins.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: Semglee is usually taken once a day as an injection, at the same time each day. Your doctor will adjust the amount based on your blood sugar levels. Semglee is not used through an IV.

Starting Dose: For type 1 diabetes, start with about one-third of your daily insulin needs. For type 2 diabetes, start with 10 units or 0.2 units per kilogram.

If switching from other insulin, your doctor will adjust the dose of your other medications. The dose for switching from NPH insulin may be the same or slightly lower depending on the number of doses you were taking.

Interaction

Some medications can affect the way insulin works. Certain medicines like oral anti-diabetic drugs, ACE inhibitors, and others may lower the amount of insulin you need. Others like steroids, thyroid hormones, and some others may increase your insulin needs.

Contraindications

Semglee is not recommended for people who are allergic to insulin glargine or any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

Common side effects include low blood sugar, allergic reactions, redness or swelling at the injection site, skin problems like lumps, itching, and rash.

Pregnancy & Lactation

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Semglee. Semglee may not be safe in the early stages of pregnancy unless needed for low iron levels. Semglee is not known if Semglee passes into breast milk, so use caution while breastfeeding. You may need to adjust the dose during pregnancy and lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

Blood sugar should be checked regularly. The dose of insulin may need to be adjusted. Semglee should not be mixed with other insulin or solutions. Semglee should not be given through an insulin pump or by IV because this can cause low blood sugar.

Overdose Effects

An overdose may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Mild cases can be treated with sugar. Severe cases may need an injection of glucose or glucagon. Your doctor may need to adjust your insulin dose and meal schedule.

Therapeutic Class

Semglee is a long-acting insulin.

Storage Conditions

Store Semglee in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. Keep Semglee away from light.
