Indications

Spiracin is used to treat infections in the respiratory tract, mouth, skin, and soft tissues caused by susceptible bacteria. Spiracin is also an alternative treatment for gonorrhea in patients allergic to penicillin. Before starting treatment for gonorrhea, other possible infections like syphilis should be checked.

Pharmacology

Spiramycin is a type of antibiotic called a macrolide. Spiracin works by binding to the bacterial ribosome, stopping the bacteria from making proteins. This prevents the bacteria from growing and multiplying. The main way Spiracin works is by helping remove the tRNA molecules from the ribosome during the protein-building process.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The usual dose is 6 to 9 million International Units per day, divided into two doses. For severe infections, the dose may be increased to 12 to 15 million units per day. For gonorrhea, a single dose of 12 to 13.5 million units is recommended.

Children: The usual daily dose is based on 150,000 IU per kilogram of body weight, divided into 2 or 3 doses.

Interaction

Spiracin has been reported that Spiramycin can reduce the absorption of carbidopa and decrease the levels of levodopa in the blood. If needed, patients should be closely monitored, and levodopa dosages may need adjustment.

Contraindications

Spiracin is not recommended for patients who are allergic to the drug. Spiracin should not be used in patients with meningitis, as the drug’s levels in the cerebrospinal fluid are too low to be effective.

Side Effects

Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach inflammation, itchy skin, or tingling and numbness in the skin.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of this product during pregnancy has not been confirmed. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their physician before use.
