Indications

Stafen 0.025% is used to treat the signs and symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, including itching, watering, redness, and swelling of the eyes and eyelids. Stafen 0.025% helps in conditions like vernal kerato-conjunctivitis, vernal-keratitis, blepharitis, blepharo-conjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis.

Pharmacology

Stafen 0.025% is a strong anti-allergic medication that blocks histamine (H1) receptors. Stafen 0.025% prevents the release of substances like histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins from cells involved in allergic reactions. Stafen 0.025% also helps stabilize mast cells, reduce inflammation, and prevent the activation of eosinophils.

Dosage & Administration

Adults and children 3 years and older: Use 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice a day, with an 8-12 hour gap between doses, not exceeding two times a day.

Children under 3 years: Consult a doctor before use.

Interaction

If used with other eye drops, there should be at least a 5-minute gap between the two medications.

Contraindications

Stafen 0.025% is contraindicated for those who are allergic to Ketotifen or any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

Common side effects include burning, stinging, blurred vision after use, dry eyes, eyelid problems, conjunctivitis, eye pain, sensitivity to light, and mild eye bleeding.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There are no sufficient studies on the use of ketotifen eye drops during pregnancy. However, the levels of the drug in the body are much lower when used as eye drops compared to oral use. Caution should be taken when prescribing Stafen 0.025% to pregnant women. Stafen 0.025% can be used during breastfeeding, as the amounts in breast milk are unlikely to be significant.

Precautions & Warnings

The eye drops contain benzalkonium chloride, which can build up in soft contact lenses. Therefore, lenses should be removed before using the drops and should not be put back for at least 15 minutes.

Overdose Effects

No serious overdose cases have been reported. If a 5 ml bottle is ingested, Stafen 0.025% would amount to 1.25 mg of Ketotifen, which is only 60% of the recommended daily dose for a 3-year-old. No severe symptoms have been observed even with up to 20 mg of Ketotifen orally.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid touching the dropper to any surface to prevent contamination. Do not use after 30 days from first opening.
