Indications
Stapkil is used to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including those caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci. Stapkil treats skin and soft tissue infections like boils, abscesses, and eczema, as well as respiratory tract infections like pneumonia and sinusitis. Stapkil is also used for other infections such as osteomyelitis, enteritis, and urinary tract infections. Stapkil is given as a preventive measure during major surgeries, like cardiothoracic and orthopedic procedures.
Pharmacology
Stapkil works against Gram-positive bacteria, including those that produce penicillinase. Stapkil stops bacteria from building their cell wall, which weakens and eventually causes the cell to burst. Stapkil resists the breakdown by penicillinase due to its special side chain, which helps Stapkil maintain its strength. Stapkil is particularly effective against staphylococci bacteria that produce penicillinase.
Dosage & Administration
Oral administration: Adults: 250 mg four times a day, or more for severe infections. For osteomyelitis and endocarditis, up to 8 gm daily in divided doses. Children (2-10 years): Half of the adult dose. Children (under 2 years): A quarter of the adult dose.
Parenteral administration: Adults: 250 mg four times daily by intramuscular injection or 250 mg-1 g by intravenous injection. Severe infections may require higher doses. Children: Same dosing as oral administration.
Interaction
Taking Flucloxacillin with other drugs can increase its levels in the blood, leading to prolonged effects. Be cautious when combining Stapkil with other medications.
Contraindications
Stapkil is contraindicated for people who are allergic to penicillin.
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and upset stomach. Other side effects like rashes, fever, and liver problems have also been reported.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Flucloxacillin is a Category B pregnancy drug. While Stapkil may be safe to use during pregnancy, Stapkil should only be used if necessary. Stapkil is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised when given to breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Use Stapkil carefully in patients with liver problems. Stapkil should also be used cautiously in people with allergic conditions.
