Indications
Sucovil M is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Sucovil M is for those whose diabetes is not well controlled with Metformin Hydrochloride or Vildagliptin alone or those already using both medicines separately.
Pharmacology
Vildagliptin works by blocking the DPP-4 enzyme, which breaks down hormones that help control blood sugar. This leads to higher levels of these hormones, which in turn increase insulin release and reduce sugar production in the liver. Metformin Hydrochloride is a medication that lowers blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes by decreasing the amount of sugar made by the liver, reducing sugar absorption from food, and helping the body use insulin more effectively.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: This combination is typically started with 1 tablet twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, based on the current dose of Metformin. If you’re already using separate tablets of Vildagliptin and Metformin, you can switch to this combination. Doses higher than 100 mg of Vildagliptin are not recommended. The combination should be taken with or just after food to reduce stomach upset from Metformin.
Interaction
No major interactions have been found when Vildagliptin (100 mg daily) is taken with Metformin (1,000 mg daily). Vildagliptin does not affect other medicines that rely on liver enzymes, so Sucovil M is unlikely to interact with other drugs. Some medicines, such as furosemide and nifedipine, may increase the levels of Metformin in the blood, but they do not affect how the body clears Metformin.
Contraindications
Sucovil M is not suitable for people who are allergic to Vildagliptin, Metformin, or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Sucovil M should not be used in people with kidney problems, heart failure, acute heart attack, sepsis, or those who have certain types of metabolic acidosis, like diabetic ketoacidosis. Sucovil M should also be stopped temporarily if you’re undergoing certain medical tests involving contrast materials, as these can affect kidney function.
Side Effects
The most common side effects include headache, tremors, dizziness, nausea, and low blood sugar.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Therefore, Sucovil M should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Sucovil M is also not recommended for use in breastfeeding women, as Sucovil M is not known whether the ingredients pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Metformin can cause lactic acidosis, a serious condition if too much builds up in the body. If you notice symptoms of acidosis, stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical attention. Kidney function should be checked regularly, especially in older adults or those taking certain other medications. Liver function tests should also be done, and if liver issues are detected, the medicine may need to be stopped.
