Indications

Sulfaben is indicated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in adults and juvenile arthritis in children who have not responded well to other treatments. Sulfaben is also used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, especially in cases with colon involvement.

Pharmacology

Sulfaben works by reducing inflammation and may affect the immune system. Sulfaben is absorbed into tissues, especially in the liver and intestines. In ulcerative colitis, its active component, 5-Aminosalicylic Acid, is thought to provide the main therapeutic benefit, while in rheumatoid arthritis, its exact action is unclear.

Dosage & Administration

Adult dose for Crohn’s disease: 500 mg taken 2 to 4 times daily with food.

Pediatric dose for Ulcerative Colitis (6 years or older): 40 to 60 mg/kg/day, divided into 3 to 6 doses.

Adult dose for Rheumatoid Arthritis: 2 g daily in two divided doses. Start with a lower dose (0.5 to 1.0 g) to avoid stomach problems.

For juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (children 6 years or older): 30 to 50 mg/kg/day in two doses. Maximum dose is typically 2 g per day.

For other conditions: Start with 3 to 4 g daily, divided into doses, and reduce to 2 g daily for maintenance.

Interaction

Taking sulfasalazine with folic acid or digoxin may reduce their absorption.

Contraindications

Sulfaben is contraindicated for individuals who are allergic to sulfasalazine, sulfonamides, or salicylates, and in patients with intestinal or urinary blockage or porphyria.

Side Effects

Common side effects include loss of appetite, headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, dizziness, and temporary infertility in men.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Sulfaben is categorized as pregnancy category B, meaning Sulfaben should only be used if necessary during pregnancy. Caution is advised when using Sulfaben during breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Sulfaben should be used with caution in people with liver or kidney issues, G6PD deficiency, asthma, or while breastfeeding.
