Indications

Sulpride 200 is used to treat both acute and long-term schizophrenia. This includes people with symptoms like delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thoughts, as well as those with more emotional and social withdrawal symptoms.

Pharmacology

Sulpride 200 is an antipsychotic medication that helps manage schizophrenia symptoms. Sulpride 200 works by binding to certain dopamine receptors in the brain. Unlike many other similar drugs, Sulpride 200 doesn’t affect other receptors like serotonin or histamine much. Sulpride 200 also doesn’t cause severe side effects like other drugs in its class.

Dosage & Administration

Oral dose: For acute psychosis, the usual dose is between 400 mg and 800 mg per day. In some cases, this can be increased to 1200 mg per day, but higher doses don’t offer extra benefits and can cause more side effects. Doses should be adjusted based on how the patient responds. Sulpride 200 is best taken before meals.

Injectable dose: For preventing or treating nausea after surgery, 5 mg is given intravenously for prevention, and 10 mg for treatment.

Interaction

Alcohol can increase side effects like drowsiness and confusion when taken with this medicine. Sulpride 200 may also interact with drugs like Diltiazem, Pregabalin, and Tramadol, as well as other antipsychotic drugs. Sulpride 200 can enhance the effects of CNS depressants (like narcotics and sedatives) and some blood pressure medications. Sulpride 200 can be taken with or without food, as Sulpride 200 does not affect absorption.

Contraindications

Sulpride 200 is not recommended for people who are allergic to Sulpride 200 or other components of the drug, or those with certain types of tumors like prolactinomas or breast cancer. Sulpride 200 should also be avoided in children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with certain heart conditions. People with liver problems may also need to avoid Sulpride 200.

Side Effects

Common side effects include shaking, muscle stiffness, slow movement, drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, and weight gain. Less common effects are difficulty controlling facial or tongue movements, weak bones, and lung infections from choking. Sulpride 200 may also cause increased levels of prolactin, leading to issues like breast pain or dysfunction in sexual health.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Sulpride 200 is not recommended during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Sulpride 200 can be found in breast milk, so breastfeeding is not advised while using this medication.

Precautions & Warnings

Patients taking Sulpride 200 should be monitored for a serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), which includes symptoms like high fever, muscle rigidity, and unstable blood pressure. Those with a history of seizures should be watched closely, and Sulpride 200 should be stopped gradually to avoid withdrawal effects. Sulpride 200 can also raise prolactin levels, leading to issues like lactation or menstrual problems.

Overdose Effects

Overdose symptoms can include drowsiness, low blood pressure, and severe movement disorders. In extreme cases, Sulpride 200 can lead to coma. Fatal outcomes have been reported when combined with other drugs.

Therapeutic Class

Sulpride 200 is classified as an atypical neuroleptic drug.

Storage Conditions

Store Sulpride 200 below 30°C in a dry, cool place, away from light. Keep Sulpride 200 out of the reach of children.
