Indications
Sumigran is indicated for the treatment of acute migraines, with or without aura, in adults.
Limitations of Use
Sumigran should only be used if a clear diagnosis of migraine has been made. Sumigran is not meant for preventing migraine attacks or treating cluster headaches.
Pharmacology
Sumigran works by activating a specific serotonin receptor in blood vessels, mainly in the brain, to cause narrowing of the blood vessels. This helps relieve the migraine headache. Sumigran also affects nerve endings, which can add to its migraine-relieving effects.
Dosage & Administration
Sumatriptan Nasal Spray: Use 10 mg as a single dose. The maximum dose in a 24-hour period is 30 mg, with doses separated by at least one hour or as directed by a doctor.
Sumatriptan Tablets: In clinical trials, 25, 50, or 100 mg doses were effective for treating migraines in adults. The higher doses may work better than 25 mg, but 100 mg is not more effective than 50 mg. If the migraine returns, you may repeat the dose after 2 hours, but do not exceed 200 mg in one day.
For children: Sumigran is not recommended for patients under 18 years old.
Interaction
Sumigran should not be used with Ergot-Containing Drugs, Monoamine Oxidase-A Inhibitors, Other 5-HT1 Agonists, and certain antidepressants like SSRIs or SNRIs.
Contraindications
Sumigran is contraindicated for people with a history of coronary artery disease, stroke, certain heart conditions, peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or hypersensitivity to sumatriptan. Sumigran should also be avoided if you have severe liver issues or have used other similar medications recently.
Side Effects
Common side effects include an unusual taste, pain or irritation in the nose or throat, and a stuffy nose. Rare side effects may include anxiety, discomfort in the nasal cavity or throat, tiredness, or vision changes.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Sumigran is classified as Pregnancy Category C. There are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Sumigran is also found in breast milk, so Sumigran is recommended to avoid breastfeeding for 12 hours after using the medication.
Precautions & Warnings
Use caution if you have heart issues, high blood pressure, or are at risk of stroke. If chest pain, tightness, or dizziness occurs, stop the medication.
