Indications

Supotaria is used to reduce severe drooling in patients aged 3 to 16 years who have neurological conditions that cause drooling, like cerebral palsy.

Pharmacology

Supotaria works by blocking acetylcholine receptors in the body, which are found in areas like the salivary glands. This prevents the stimulation of these receptors, reducing the amount of saliva produced.

Dosage & Administration

Adults & Elderly: Supotaria should be measured and given using an accurate measuring device. The starting dose is 0.02 mg/kg, taken three times a day. The dose can be increased every 5-7 days by 0.02 mg/kg based on how well the medicine works and any side effects. The highest dose should not exceed 0.1 mg/kg, three times a day, or 1.5-3 mg per dose based on weight.

Children: Supotaria should be given at least one hour before or two hours after meals. Fatty foods can reduce the effectiveness if taken too soon after a meal.

Interaction

Digoxin: Using Supotaria with digoxin can increase digoxin levels in the blood. Monitor patients and consider other options for digoxin.

Amantadine: The effects of Supotaria may be stronger if taken with amantadine. Consider lowering the dose of Supotaria when used together.

Atenolol or Metformin: Supotaria may raise the levels of these drugs in the blood. A dose reduction may be needed.

Haloperidol or Levodopa: Supotaria may lower the levels of these drugs. A dose increase may be required.

Contraindications

Supotaria should not be used in patients with conditions that don’t allow the use of anticholinergic medicines (e.g., glaucoma, certain gut problems, and certain heart conditions). Supotaria should also not be used with potassium chloride tablets as Supotaria can delay their movement through the stomach.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include stomach discomfort, dry mouth, headache, constipation, irritability, trouble sleeping, and skin reactions like rashes. Serious side effects include confusion, vision problems, or trouble breathing.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is not enough information about its effects during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Supotaria is important to weigh the potential benefits against the risks before using Supotaria during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Supotaria should be used carefully in patients with constipation, intestinal issues, or conditions worsened by dry mouth. Patients should avoid hot environments to prevent heat stroke. Supotaria may cause drowsiness or blurred vision, so Supotaria is advised not to drive or operate machinery while using Supotaria.

Overdose Effects

If an overdose occurs, symptoms might include dry mouth, difficulty breathing, or confusion. Treatment may include breathing support, managing fever or seizures, and administering specific antidotes to reverse effects.

Therapeutic Class

Supotaria belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergics and anti-spasmodics.

Storage Conditions

Store Supotaria below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
