Indications

Sympres 0.3 is used to treat high blood pressure and is part of a group of medicines called anti-hypertensives that help lower blood pressure.

Pharmacology

Sympres 0.3 works by stimulating certain receptors in the brain to lower blood pressure. Moxonidine binds to a receptor known as the imidazoline receptor 1 (I1), reducing the sympathetic nervous system activity and lowering blood pressure. Unlike most other blood pressure medications, Sympres 0.3 has a low effect on alpha-2-adrenergic receptors, which helps prevent common side effects like drowsiness and dry mouth.

Dosage & Administration

Adults (including the elderly): The usual starting dose is one 200 microgram tablet taken in the morning. After three weeks, the dose may be increased to 400 micrograms daily, either in a single dose in the morning or split into two doses (morning and evening). After another three weeks, the dose may be increased to 600 micrograms daily, split into two doses. Do not take more than 400 micrograms as a single dose, or more than 600 micrograms in total per day.

If you forget to take a dose, take Sympres 0.3 as soon as you remember unless Sympres 0.3’s almost time for your next dose. Never take two doses to make up for a missed one.

Interaction

Talk to your doctor if you are taking any of the following: beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol, atenolol), other blood pressure medications (e.g., furosemide, captopril), antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), or sleeping pills (e.g., zopiclone). Moxonidine is removed from the body through the kidneys, so other medicines that are also cleared by the kidneys may affect how moxonidine works. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication.
