Indications
Synflorix is used to help protect against pneumococcal disease. The vaccine contains 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria that cause around 90% of invasive pneumococcal infections. Synflorix is recommended for active immunization in children aged 2 years and older, as well as adults and adolescents.
Pharmacology
Synflorix is made from purified pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides, which are derived from 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria. These serotypes are responsible for most serious pneumococcal infections.
Dosage & Administration
Primary vaccination: For adults and children 2 years or older, a single dose of 0.5 mL is given by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. This vaccine is not recommended for children younger than 2 years due to safety and effectiveness concerns.
Special dosing: Synflorix is best to get the vaccine at least two weeks before planned surgery, chemotherapy, or immunosuppressive treatment. After chemotherapy or radiation therapy, wait at least three months before getting the vaccine.
Revaccination: A single 0.5 mL dose can be given for revaccination. Synflorix’s usually not recommended to revaccinate within 3 years. If revaccination is needed, Synflorix should be determined by official guidelines. For certain high-risk people, revaccination after three years may be considered.
Interaction
Synflorix can be given at the same time as the flu vaccine, as long as different needles and injection sites are used.
Contraindications
Synflorix should not be given to people who are allergic to any component of the vaccine, those with fever or active infection, or people with uncontrolled epilepsy or other serious nervous system diseases.
Side Effects
Common side effects include pain, soreness, or swelling at the injection site (60%), headache (17.6%), redness at the injection site (16.4%), tiredness (13.2%), and muscle pain (11.9%).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Animal studies on the vaccine’s effects during pregnancy are not enough to fully understand its safety. Synflorix should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Synflorix is not known if the vaccine passes into breast milk, so caution is advised when Synflorix is given to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Delay vaccination if there is a significant fever, active infection, or any condition that may make a reaction worse. Synflorix should never be injected into a blood vessel or under the skin. For people who are immunosuppressed due to illness or treatment, the vaccine may not work as well. Keep epinephrine (adrenaline) on hand in case of a severe allergic reaction. Synflorix may not work for infections caused by basilar skull fractures or if there is an opening to the cerebrospinal fluid.
