Indications
T-Mycin Eye Ointment is used to treat external bacterial infections of the eye caused by bacteria that can be treated with this antibiotic. These include:
- Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus spp. (group A beta-hemolytic), and some nonhemolytic species.
- Gram-negative bacteria: E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Haemophilus influenzae, Morganella morganii, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Providentia, Serratia, Salmonella spp., and some strains of Neisseria.
Pharmacology
T-Mycin Eye Ointment works by entering bacteria cells through active transport. Once inside, T-Mycin Eye Ointment binds to the bacterial ribosome, preventing protein synthesis and causing errors in genetic code transcription. While the exact way T-Mycin Eye Ointment causes cell death is not fully understood, other mechanisms, such as affecting the cell membrane, might also contribute.
Dosage & Administration
Ophthalmic Ointment: In mild to moderate infections, apply a small amount 2-3 times a day into the affected eye(s). In severe infections, apply 3-4 times a day until improvement is seen, then gradually reduce the dose.
Ophthalmic Solution: For mild to moderate infections, apply 1-2 drops every 4 hours. For severe infections, apply 2 drops every hour until improvement is seen.
Pediatric Use: The safety and effectiveness in children under 1 year have not been established.
Interaction
Be cautious when using T-Mycin Eye Ointment with other drugs, especially those with neuromuscular blocking agents or ototoxic drugs.
Contraindications
T-Mycin Eye Ointment should not be used by people who are allergic to Tobramycin or any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
The most common side effect is local irritation in the eye, which can cause redness and itching of the eyelids.
Pregnancy & Lactation
T-Mycin Eye Ointment is classified as Pregnancy Category B. There are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women, so T-Mycin Eye Ointment should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh any risks to the baby. T-Mycin Eye Ointment may pass into breast milk, so a decision should be made whether to continue nursing or stop taking the drug.
Precautions & Warnings
Some patients may be sensitive to this drug. If any sensitivity occurs, stop using T-Mycin Eye Ointment. Long-term use may allow non-susceptible organisms or fungi to grow.
Overdose Effects
Signs of overdose may include symptoms similar to the side effects, such as irritation or discomfort in the eyes.
