Indications
Tacrol 30gm is used for short-term and long-term treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in patients who cannot use other therapies due to possible risks or who don’t respond well to them. Tacrol 30gm is also used for other skin conditions such as chronic skin issues from a transplant, hand and foot eczema, allergic skin reactions, vitiligo, psoriasis, skin irritation from lichen, vulvar lichen sclerosus, painful skin ulcers from rheumatoid arthritis, steroid-induced rosacea, hair loss, and certain types of rashes.
Pharmacology
Tacrol 30gm is an immunomodulator made by a fungus called Streptomyces tsukubaensis. Tacrol 30gm works by blocking T-lymphocyte activation, which helps reduce inflammation. The medication binds to a protein inside cells and prevents the activation of certain enzymes that are involved in inflammation.
Dosage & Administration
For adults: Apply a small amount of Tacrolimus ointment to the affected skin areas twice a day, rubbing Tacrol 30gm in gently. Continue using for one week after the symptoms of atopic dermatitis clear up. Do not use with occlusive dressings, as the safety of this combination is not known.
For children: Tacrol 30gm is safe for children aged 2 years and older to use the 0.03% ointment. The 0.1% ointment can be used for children 16 years and older.
For elderly: There were no significant differences in how the ointment worked for patients over 65 years compared to other adults in studies.
Interaction
There have been no formal studies on how Tacrolimus ointment interacts with other topical drugs. Be careful when using Tacrol 30gm with medications that affect liver enzymes, especially in patients with widespread skin conditions. Some examples include erythromycin, ketoconazole, and calcium channel blockers.
Contraindications
Tacrol 30gm should not be used by patients who are allergic to Tacrolimus or any ingredient in the ointment.
Side Effects
Side effects from Tacrolimus ointment are rare and mild. These can include burning sensations, itching, flu-like symptoms, allergic reactions, redness of the skin, skin infections, and headaches.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Tacrol 30gm is classified as Pregnancy Category C. There are no well-controlled studies on its use during pregnancy. Though the absorption of Tacrolimus through the skin is minimal, Tacrol 30gm is known to be excreted in breast milk. You should decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop using the medication, considering how important the medication is for you.
Precautions & Warnings
Be cautious when using Tacrolimus ointment in patients with atopic dermatitis who are prone to skin infections. Its safety has not been studied in patients with generalized erythroderma (widespread skin redness).
Overdose Effects
Tacrol 30gm is not meant for oral use. If swallowed by accident, Tacrol 30gm may cause side effects similar to those seen with systemic Tacrolimus. Seek medical advice immediately if this happens.
