Indications

Tamiflu is used to prevent the flu (influenza) in adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older who have been in contact with someone diagnosed with the flu. Tamiflu is also used to treat the flu in adults and children over one year of age when the flu virus is spreading in the community.

Pharmacology

Tamiflu is a prodrug that turns into Oseltamivir carboxylate in the body. This active form blocks neuraminidase, a viral enzyme that helps the flu virus spread and infect new cells. By doing this, Tamiflu stops the virus from releasing from infected cells.

Dosage & Administration

Adult & Adolescent: The recommended dose for treating the flu is 75 mg twice a day for 5 days. Treatment should start within 2 days of flu symptoms.

Pediatric patients: The safety and effectiveness of this drug for preventing the flu in children under 13 years old have not been established.

For prevention: After close contact with someone with the flu, the dose for adults and adolescents 13 years and older is 75 mg once a day for at least 7 days. Start within 2 days of exposure.

For prevention during a flu outbreak in the community, the dose is 75 mg once a day. This can be used for up to 6 weeks, and protection continues as long as you are taking the medication.

Interaction

Studies show that Tamiflu is unlikely to have significant drug interactions. Taking Tamiflu with amoxicillin does not affect the levels of either drug in the body.

Contraindications

Tamiflu is not recommended for patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medicine.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are nausea and vomiting, usually mild to moderate, and typically happen within the first 2 days of taking the medicine. Other rare side effects include chest pain, anemia, digestive issues, and fractures.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Tamiflu is in pregnancy Category C, meaning there is not enough information to determine if Tamiflu is safe for the developing baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Tamiflu is not known if the drug passes into breast milk. Tamiflu should be used during breastfeeding only if the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risks to the baby.

Precautions & Warnings

Tamiflu is not effective for treating illnesses caused by viruses other than the flu types A and B. Tamiflu is also not proven to work if treatment starts more than 40 hours after flu symptoms begin.

Overdose Effects

There is no known experience with overdoses. However, taking a single dose of up to 1000 mg has been linked to nausea and vomiting.

Therapeutic Class

Tamiflu is used to treat respiratory viral infections, including influenza.

Storage Conditions

Store at 25°C. If using a reconstituted suspension, store Tamiflu between 2-8°C for up to 17 days or at 25°C for up to 10 days. Do not freeze.
