Tamsule SR
Form: Capsule
Strength: 0.4mg
Generic Name: Tamsulosin Hydrochloride
Company: Sharif Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
MRP:৳ 10.03 (Capsule)
Is Antibiotic: No
Indications
Tamsule SR is used to treat symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate becomes enlarged, affecting urine flow.
Pharmacology
Tamsule SR works by blocking certain receptors in the prostate that help relax the muscles in the bladder neck and prostate, improving urine flow and reducing BPH symptoms. After taking the capsule, Tamsule SR is almost completely absorbed by the body. Tamsule SR takes around 4 to 5 hours to reach the highest concentration in the blood when taken on an empty stomach, or 6 to 7 hours with food. Tamsule SR is mostly bound to plasma proteins and is broken down in the liver. Less than 10% of Tamsule SR is excreted unchanged in the urine. The drug’s effects last for about 9 to 15 hours, depending on the individual.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: Take one capsule (0.4 mg) daily after a meal, preferably at night. If necessary, the dose can be increased after 2 to 4 weeks to two capsules (0.8 mg) daily. If you stop or miss doses for several days, restart with one capsule daily. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, and do not chew or crush Tamsule SR.
Pediatric patients: Tamsule SR is not recommended for use in children.
Interaction
Taking other alpha1 blockers with Tamsule SR may lower blood pressure too much. There are no significant interactions with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine. However, taking cimetidine may increase its levels in the blood, while furosemide may decrease them. There are no interactions seen with liver enzymes, but drugs like diclofenac and warfarin may speed up its removal from the body.
Contraindications
Tamsule SR should not be used if you are allergic to Tamsule SR, have a history of low blood pressure upon standing (orthostatic hypotension), or severe liver disease. Use with caution in individuals who may experience dizziness or weakness, especially when standing up, as Tamsule SR may cause fainting. Also, avoid tasks like driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness. Before starting treatment, a doctor should examine you to rule out other conditions that might cause similar symptoms to BPH. Regular checks like a prostate exam and PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) tests should be done during treatment.
Side Effects
Common side effects include dizziness and problems with ejaculation. Less frequent side effects are headaches, tiredness, low blood pressure when standing, and palpitations (a feeling of a fast or irregular heartbeat).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Tamsule SR is not recommended to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
There have been rare cases of dizziness when standing after the first dose. Tamsule SR is not recommended for people with fainting spells due to urination. Patients should also be cautious while driving or operating heavy machinery, as dizziness may occur.
Overdose Effects
No cases of severe overdose have been reported, but if an overdose occurs, Tamsule SR may cause low blood pressure. Treatment includes lying down the patient, and if needed, using medication to raise blood pressure. Dialysis is unlikely to help since Tamsule SR binds tightly to plasma proteins. In case of large overdoses, measures like stomach pumping or activated charcoal can be used.
Therapeutic Class
Tamsule SR is used to treat BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) and conditions related to urinary retention or incontinence.
Storage Conditions
Store Tamsule SR in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, and away from light.
