Tapazol 5 is used to treat patients with Graves’ disease with hyperthyroidism or toxic multinodular goiter when surgery or radioactive iodine therapy is not suitable. Tapazol 5 is also used to reduce symptoms of hyperthyroidism before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy.
Pharmacology
Tapazol 5 works by blocking the production of thyroid hormones, making Tapazol 5 effective in treating hyperthyroidism. Tapazol 5 does not affect thyroid hormones already present in the body. Tapazol 5 is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, processed in the liver, and removed through the urine.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: The usual starting dose is 15 mg for mild hyperthyroidism, 30 to 40 mg for moderate cases, and 60 mg for severe cases, taken in 3 doses throughout the day. The maintenance dose is 5 to 15 mg daily.
Pediatric patients: The initial dose is 0.4 mg per kg of body weight, divided into 3 doses. The maintenance dose is about half of the starting dose.
For children and adolescents: Due to potential liver problems with another medication, Methimazole is preferred for treating hyperthyroidism in children.

With medicine: Tapazol 5 may increase the effects of blood thinners like warfarin. Tapazol 5 may also affect the use of beta-blockers, digitalis, and theophylline. Adjustments in dosages may be necessary.
With food: Tapazol 5 should be taken consistently in relation to meals as food can change how well Tapazol 5 is absorbed.
