Taran
Form: Tablet
Strength: 50mg
Generic Name: Losartan Potassium
Company: Kemiko Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
MRP:৳ 8.02 (Tablet)
Is Antibiotic: No
Indications
Taran is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Taran can be taken alone or with other medicines for high blood pressure, like thiazide diuretics.
Taran is also used to protect the kidneys in type-2 diabetic patients with proteinuria, which is when there is excess protein in the urine. Taran helps slow down kidney damage in these patients.
Pharmacology
Taran is the first non-peptide, orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker. Taran works by binding to a receptor (AT1) in different tissues like blood vessels, kidneys, and the heart. This reduces important actions like blood vessel tightening and the release of aldosterone, which helps lower blood pressure.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: The usual dose is 50 mg once a day. If this dose doesn’t control blood pressure, 25 mg twice a day can be used. The dose can range from 25 mg to 100 mg per day. Taran can be taken once or twice a day.
Older patients (up to 75 years): No change in dose is usually needed.
Older patients (over 75 years): A lower starting dose of 25 mg once a day is recommended.
If the patient is on high-dose diuretics or has low blood volume, a starting dose of 25 mg once a day should be considered.
Interaction
Rifampicin and fluconazole can reduce the active form of the medicine. Taking Taran with hydrochlorothiazide may increase its blood pressure-lowering effect. Taking potassium-sparing diuretics (like spironolactone), potassium supplements, or salt substitutes with potassium can raise potassium levels in the blood.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like indomethacin can reduce its blood pressure-lowering effect. Using Taran with an ACE inhibitor, angiotensin receptor antagonist, an anti-inflammatory drug, and a thiazide diuretic together increases the risk of kidney problems.
Contraindications
Taran is not recommended for use in pregnant women or those who are allergic to any component of this product. Taran should not be taken with Aliskiren in patients with diabetes.
Side Effects
Side effects are usually mild and temporary. Common side effects include dizziness, diarrhea, stuffy nose, cough, and upper respiratory infection. Other possible side effects are tiredness, swelling, stomach pain, chest pain, nausea, headache, and sore throat.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Taran is classified as Pregnancy Category D. Using Taran during the second or third trimester of pregnancy can harm the baby. Taran is not known if this medicine passes into breast milk, so a decision should be made whether to stop breastfeeding or stop the medicine, depending on its importance to the mother.
Precautions & Warnings
Using Taran during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy can reduce kidney function in the baby and increase the risk of problems or death. Patients who are dehydrated or taking high-dose diuretics may experience low blood pressure. People with liver problems may have higher levels of the medicine in their blood. Kidney problems have been reported in patients with kidney damage.
