Indications

Tufnil is used to relieve the pain of migraine headaches and is also recommended for use as a painkiller in post-operative pain and fever.

Pharmacology

Tufnil belongs to the fenamate group and works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. This helps to reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation in the body. Tufnil also affects the receptors of these inflammatory substances to reduce their effects directly.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: For acute migraine attacks, take 200 mg when symptoms appear. This dose may be repeated after 1-2 hours. For mild to moderate pain, take 100-200 mg three times a day (tid).
Renal impairment: Dose adjustments may be necessary.
Severe renal impairment: Avoid using Tufnil.
Children: No pediatric dosage has been established.

Tufnil should be taken with food and accompanied by water during or immediately after meals.

Interaction

The absorption of Tufnil increases when taken with Metoclopramide and Magnesium hydroxide but decreases with Aluminium hydroxide. The risk of bleeding increases when taken with anticoagulants and other NSAIDs. Tufnil reduces the effect of some blood pressure medications. Taking Tufnil with Lithium, Methotrexate, or heart medications can increase their blood levels. Tufnil also increases the risk of kidney damage when taken with certain drugs like ACE inhibitors, Ciclosporin, Tacrolimus, or diuretics.

Contraindications

Tufnil is not recommended for patients with active gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, or a history of these conditions. Tufnil is also not recommended for people with severe heart failure.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include rare conditions like lung inflammation, liver damage, and pancreatitis. Other side effects may include diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, rash, visual disturbances, and high blood pressure. Overdose symptoms can include headache, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, drowsiness, and in severe cases, kidney or liver damage.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Tufnil is not recommended during pregnancy unless your doctor considers Tufnil necessary. Tufnil should not be used during the third trimester. Tufnil can appear in breast milk in low amounts, so Tufnil is better to avoid Tufnil while breastfeeding if possible.

Precautions & Warnings

Tufnil should be used with caution in patients with asthma, bleeding disorders, heart problems, high blood pressure, ulcers, liver infection, kidney issues, or the elderly. Increasing water intake or reducing the dose can help reduce urinary problems.

Overdose Effects

Overdose symptoms may include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, and in severe cases, kidney or liver damage. In cases of poisoning, patients should be treated symptomatically.

Therapeutic Class

Tufnil is used for treating rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, and as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Storage Conditions
