Indications
Vironil is used with other medications to treat HIV-1 infection. Vironil is also used to treat chronic hepatitis B in adults.
Pharmacology
Vironil works by blocking the activity of HIV reverse transcriptase. This enzyme helps HIV to copy its genetic material, and by interfering with this process, Vironil prevents the virus from spreading in the body.
Vironil is a water-soluble form of the active ingredient Tenofovir. When taken, Vironil reaches its highest concentration in the blood after 1 to 10.4 hours. Vironil has low protein binding and a half-life of about 17 hours. Vironil is mainly cleared from the body through the kidneys.
Dosage & Administration
The dose and frequency should be adjusted according to the patient’s needs. Vironil is generally taken once a day, with or without food.
For adults: The recommended dose for treating HIV-1 or chronic hepatitis B is one 245 mg tablet daily, regardless of food.
For children (12 years or older, weighing at least 35 kg): The recommended dose is also one 245 mg tablet daily, without regard to food.
Interaction
Didanosine: Use with caution. Patients taking both should be monitored closely for side effects.
Atazanavir: Monitor for possible side effects of Tenofovir when used with Atazanavir.
Lopinavir, Ritonavir: Patients should be closely monitored for side effects of Tenofovir when used with these medications.
Contraindications
Vironil should not be used if you have bone issues, severe liver or kidney disease, low phosphate levels in your blood, or high blood acidity. Vironil is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
Side Effects
Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, and weakness. Some people may also experience indigestion, chest pain, or drowsiness. Serious side effects like high cholesterol, kidney problems, depression, or anxiety should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Vironil is in pregnancy category B. There is not enough research in pregnant women, so Vironil should only be used if absolutely necessary. HIV-positive mothers are advised not to breastfeed to avoid spreading the virus to their babies.
Precautions & Warnings
Vironil can cause serious liver and kidney problems, including a condition called lactic acidosis. People who stop treatment may experience a worsening of hepatitis. Vironil should not be used with certain other medications, like adefovir disoproxil. Patients with both HIV-1 and hepatitis B need to be monitored closely when using this medication.
