Indications
Xadu 100 is used to treat adults with anemia caused by chronic kidney disease (CKD) that leads to symptoms.
Pharmacology
Xadu 100 works by blocking an enzyme called HIF-prolyl hydroxylase, which normally breaks down proteins that help regulate oxygen levels in the body. By preventing this breakdown, Xadu 100 increases the production of erythropoietin, a hormone that boosts red blood cell production. Xadu 100 also helps improve iron availability and boosts hemoglobin (Hb) levels, supporting better blood oxygen levels. This medication also helps manage iron levels in CKD patients, increasing iron absorption and release while lowering cholesterol levels.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Xadu 100 should be taken orally three times per week, not on consecutive days. The starting dose is 50 mg for patients not on other anemia treatments. For patients under 100 kg, the dose is 70 mg, and for those 100 kg or more, Xadu 100 is 100 mg. If switching from other treatments, the starting dose is 70 or 100 mg.
Adjustments: The dose may be increased or decreased based on the patient’s response. If the hemoglobin level rises too quickly, the dose should be reduced or treatment stopped. If a dose is missed, take Xadu 100 as soon as possible if there’s enough time before the next dose. Do not take two doses at once.
Method: The tablets can be taken with or without food.
Interaction
Xadu 100 may interact with phosphate binders and other products containing multivalent cations, reducing its effectiveness. Xadu 100 may also increase the levels of other medications like gemfibrozil, probenecid, and certain statins. Always consult a doctor before using Xadu 100 with other medications.
Contraindications

Side Effects
Common side effects include high blood pressure, blood clots, diarrhea, swelling in the legs, high potassium levels, and nausea.

Xadu 100 should be used cautiously in people at risk of blood clots, especially those with a history of clots or obesity. Xadu 100 should also be avoided in patients with serious infections or liver problems. Pregnant women should not take this medication.

Overdose symptoms may include a fast heart rate and higher than necessary hemoglobin levels. If overdosed, treatment may involve reducing or stopping the medication.
