Form: Eye Drop

Generic Name: Latanoprost 0.005% Eye prep

Company: Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

MRP:৳ 460.0   (2.5ml Drop)

Is Antibiotic: No

Indications

Xalaprost is used to lower eye pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who don’t respond well to other treatments like β-blockers or prostaglandins.

Pharmacology

Xalaprost is a combination of two medicines. Latanoprost is a prostaglandin analogue that helps lower eye pressure by increasing fluid outflow from the eye. Timolol is a non-selective adrenergic blocker that lowers eye pressure by reducing fluid production in the eye.

Dosage & Administration

Adult & Elderly: One drop in the affected eye(s) once a day. If a dose is missed, continue with the next dose as normal.

Pediatric patients: Xalaprost is not recommended for use in children as safety and effectiveness have not been established.

Interaction

No specific interaction studies have been performed. If used with oral β-blockers, patients should be monitored for additional effects. Xalaprost is not recommended to use two topical β-blockers together. Caution is needed if used with epinephrine, as Xalaprost may cause pupil dilation. Xalaprost may also increase the effects of antidiabetic medications. Avoid mixing with eye drops containing thimerosal.

Contraindications

Xalaprost is contraindicated for people who are allergic to Latanoprost, Timolol, benzalkonium chloride, or any other ingredient in the product. Xalaprost should also not be used by people with respiratory diseases like asthma, heart conditions, or severe low blood pressure.

Side Effects

Xalaprost is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include eye irritation like stinging, burning, or itching, as well as redness in the eyes, corneal problems, conjunctivitis, and skin rash. Some people may notice changes in eye color or thicker, longer eyelashes.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Xalaprost should only be used during pregnancy if the benefit outweighs the potential risk to the baby. Xalaprost may pass into breast milk, so Xalaprost should be used with caution by nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Xalaprost should be used carefully in people with macular edema, eye surgery history, or those at risk for macular edema. Diabetic patients or those on insulin should also take caution. Patients wearing contact lenses or those who drive or operate machinery should be careful.

Overdose Effects

There is no specific information on overdose effects. Symptoms of overdose with Timolol can include slow heart rate, low blood pressure, and difficulty breathing. Treatment should focus on managing symptoms. The effects of a Latanoprost overdose are unknown, so symptomatic treatment should be used.

Therapeutic Class

Xalaprost belongs to the class of drugs used for treating glaucoma and eye pressure problems.

Storage Conditions

Store at 2-8°C. After opening, Xalaprost may be stored below 25°C.
