Indications
Xalcort is used to treat conditions like asthma, severe allergic reactions, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases. Xalcort helps manage diseases such as lupus, sarcoidosis, and ulcerative colitis. Xalcort is also used in treating eye problems like uveitis and optic neuritis, as well as certain types of cancer and to prevent organ rejection after a transplant.
Pharmacology
Xalcort works by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system. Xalcort does this by blocking certain enzymes and chemicals that cause inflammation and immune responses in the body.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: For short-term conditions, the initial dose may be up to 120 mg/day. For maintenance, doses typically range from 3-18 mg/day depending on the condition.
Rheumatoid arthritis: Maintenance doses are usually between 3-18 mg/day, with the lowest effective dose being preferred.
Bronchial asthma: During an acute attack, higher doses (48-72 mg/day) may be required. For maintenance, the lowest dose needed to control symptoms should be used.
Children: The dosage for children should be the lowest effective dose, often ranging from 0.25-1.5 mg/kg/day. For conditions like juvenile arthritis or nephrotic syndrome, the dose will vary based on clinical needs.
Deflazacort withdrawal: If used for extended periods or in high doses, Xalcort should be gradually reduced, especially in cases where the disease may relapse.
Interaction
Xalcort is metabolized by the liver. If used with drugs that speed up liver processes, the dose of Deflazacort may need to be increased. On the other hand, drugs that slow down liver activity might require a dose reduction.
Contraindications
Xalcort should not be used by individuals who are allergic to its components or those who are receiving live virus vaccines.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include stomach issues, muscle and bone problems, changes in hormones, mood changes, eye issues, and fluid imbalances. Xalcort may also increase the risk of infections and skin issues like acne or thinning skin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Xalcort can cross the placenta, so Xalcort should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Xalcort may affect the growth of the baby. While breastfeeding, low doses of Deflazacort are unlikely to affect the baby, but higher doses may cause some adrenal suppression in the infant.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution is needed in patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Xalcort can cause water retention, increased blood pressure, and electrolyte imbalances. Xalcort should be used carefully in patients with peptic ulcers, infections, or kidney problems. Monitoring is necessary in these cases.
Overdose Effects
No specific information is available regarding overdose effects for this medication.
Therapeutic Class
Xalcort belongs to the glucocorticoid class of drugs.
Storage Conditions
Xalcort should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture, and kept out of the reach of children.
