Pharmacology

Xclor is also helpful in treating infections in the nose and throat caused by Streptococci.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The usual dose is 250 mg every 8 hours. For more severe infections, the dose may be doubled to a maximum of 4 g per day. For throat infections, treatment should last at least 10 days.

Children: For children over 1 month, the usual dose is 20 mg per kg per day, divided into 3 doses. For serious infections, the dose can go up to 40 mg per kg per day, with a maximum of 1 g per day.

For infants (less than 1 month): Safety has not been established.

For renal impairment: Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with kidney problems.

For patients on dialysis: A loading dose of 250 mg to 1 g is recommended before dialysis, with maintenance doses after dialysis.

Interaction

Xclor may cause false-positive urine glucose tests. When taken with blood thinners (like warfarin), Xclor may increase the blood-thinning effect, so regular monitoring is advised.

Contraindications

Xclor is not recommended for patients who are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics.

Side Effects

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Rare side effects include liver problems, fever, abdominal pain, and kidney issues.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Xclor should only be used during pregnancy if necessary. Small amounts may pass into breast milk, so caution is advised when used by breastfeeding women.

Precautions & Warnings

Xclor should not be used without a proven bacterial infection. Prolonged use can lead to resistant bacteria. Use with caution in patients with a history of allergies, especially to penicillins or other antibiotics.

Overdose Effects

Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

Therapeutic Class

Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotics.

Storage Conditions
