Indications
Xelcoral-DX is used to treat and prevent Osteoporosis. Xelcoral-DX helps increase Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and lowers the chance of vertebral fractures.
Pharmacology
Ibandronic Acid is a medicine that works by preventing bone loss. Xelcoral-DX affects bone tissue by sticking to its mineral parts, helping to reduce bone breakdown. In postmenopausal women, Xelcoral-DX lowers the rate of bone loss and helps gain more bone mass.
Coral Calcium is a form of calcium that is easier for the body to absorb compared to other types of calcium. Xelcoral-DX also contains small amounts of Magnesium and other minerals. Vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium from the digestive system and maintain calcium levels in the body.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: One 150 mg tablet of Ibandronic Acid is recommended once a month, on the same day each month. Xelcoral-DX is usually advised to take two tablets of Calcium 500 mg and Vitamin D3 200 IU daily, either divided into doses or as directed by your doctor.
Day 1: Take the Ibandronic Acid tablet on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before eating or drinking anything, except water. Swallow the tablet with a glass of plain water, while sitting or standing upright. Do not lie down for 60 minutes. Do not chew or suck the tablet.
Day 2-31: Take one tablet of Calcium and Vitamin D3 in the morning and one in the evening after meals. Follow the order on the blister strip to keep track of your doses.
Pediatric patients: Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
Interaction
Taking Ibandronic Acid with products containing calcium or other multivalent cations (like magnesium, iron), milk, food, or antacids can reduce its absorption. Xelcoral-DX may also interact with H2 blockers like Ranitidine.
Calcium and Vitamin D3 can reduce the absorption of tetracycline and fluoride medications, so at least 3 hours should pass before taking these medicines. Some medications like Phenytoin, barbiturates, and glucocorticoids can reduce the effectiveness of Vitamin D3. Foods like spinach, cereals, and dairy may also reduce calcium absorption.
Contraindications
Ibandronic Acid should not be used by people with esophagus issues, such as a narrow esophagus or trouble swallowing, or if they cannot stay upright for at least 60 minutes. Xelcoral-DX is also contraindicated in people with low calcium levels or known sensitivity to the drug.
Calcium and Vitamin D3 should not be used by people who are allergic to any of its ingredients or those with conditions like high calcium levels, kidney stones, or severe kidney issues. Xelcoral-DX should also be avoided by people taking Digoxin, as careful monitoring of calcium levels is required in such cases.
Side Effects
Ibandronic Acid: Common side effects include high blood pressure, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, joint pain, back pain, muscle cramps, flu-like symptoms, and headache. Rare side effects include skin rash, insomnia, and respiratory infections.
Calcium and Vitamin D3: Most common side effects include bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach discomfort. Rarely, long-term use may lead to high calcium levels or kidney stones.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category C. There are no adequate studies on the use of this kit during pregnancy. Xelcoral-DX should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the risk to the mother and baby.
Xelcoral-DX is not known if this kit passes into breast milk. Since many medications do, Xelcoral-DX should only be used during breastfeeding if necessary and with caution.
Precautions & Warnings
Ibandronic Acid can irritate the upper digestive tract. Caution is advised if you have any active gastrointestinal problems, such as ulcers or esophagus issues.
Xelcoral-DX is important to treat any low calcium levels or bone and mineral metabolism issues before starting this treatment. Some patients may experience severe bone, joint, or muscle pain.
In rare cases, jawbone problems have been reported, particularly in patients undergoing dental procedures. Calcium and Vitamin D3 should be used carefully in people with kidney stones or those at risk of high calcium levels.
Overdose Effects
Overdose with Ibandronic Acid may cause low calcium levels, low phosphate levels, and digestive issues. Treatment should focus on managing these symptoms.
