Indications
Xenobese 120 is used for treating obesity in adults with a BMI greater than 30, or in overweight adults with a BMI above 28 and additional risk factors such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. If there is no significant weight loss (at least 5%) after 12 weeks, the treatment should be stopped.
For adolescents aged 12 and above, Xenobese 120 is considered when diet and exercise alone cannot reduce body weight. Xenobese 120 may be especially helpful if obesity complications are present.
Pharmacology
Xenobese 120 is a powerful lipase inhibitor that works in the stomach and small intestine. Xenobese 120 blocks the enzyme that breaks down fats in food, preventing their absorption. This results in fewer calories being absorbed, helping with weight control. Xenobese 120 does not need to be absorbed into the bloodstream to work. At the recommended dose of 120 mg three times a day, Xenobese 120 prevents the absorption of about 30% of dietary fat.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended dose is one 120 mg capsule before, during, or up to one hour after each main meal. If a meal is missed or contains no fat, skip the dose. Doses above 120 mg three times a day do not provide extra benefits. The effects can be seen 24-48 hours after taking the medicine.
In clinical studies, the treatment was found to be safe and effective for up to 4 years. The dosage for adolescents is the same as for adults.
Special dosage instructions: Its safety and effectiveness have not been studied in elderly patients or those with liver or kidney problems.
Interaction
Xenobese 120 can reduce the effectiveness of cyclosporine. Xenobese 120 may also interfere with the absorption of vitamin E. The effect on the absorption of other vitamins like A, D, and K is not known. People taking Xenobese 120 with levothyroxine should be monitored for thyroid changes and take these medications at least 4 hours apart. Xenobese 120 may also reduce vitamin K absorption, so patients on blood thinners like warfarin need to be monitored closely. Some cases of convulsions have been reported when taken with anti-seizure medicines.
Contraindications
Xenobese 120 is not recommended for people with chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis (a liver condition), or those who are allergic to any ingredient in the medicine.
Side Effects
Common: Most side effects are related to the digestive system, such as oily stools, gas, urgent bowel movements, and stomach discomfort.
Rare: Some people may experience flu-like symptoms, anxiety, headaches, fatigue, or allergic reactions such as itching, rash, or swelling.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Xenobese 120 is not safe to use during pregnancy. Losing weight during pregnancy can harm the baby. Pregnant women should gain weight, not lose Xenobese 120, and should avoid taking this medicine.
Lactation: Xenobese 120 is not known if Xenobese 120 passes into breast milk. Use with caution if breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Before using Xenobese 120, organic causes of obesity (such as hypothyroidism) should be ruled out. Xenobese 120 should not be taken with cyclosporine; if both are needed, cyclosporine should be taken at least 2 hours apart.
People with diabetes may see less weight loss with this medicine. Blood sugar levels should be monitored closely, and the dosage of diabetes medications may need to be adjusted.
Xenobese 120 may increase digestive side effects if taken with fatty meals. A multivitamin supplement is recommended to prevent deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins, as Xenobese 120 can reduce their absorption.
Overdose Effects
Even with high doses (up to 800 mg in a single dose), there have been no significant side effects. If an overdose occurs, the person should be observed for 24 hours. Most effects should wear off quickly.
