Indications
Xerova EZ 10/10 is used alongside diet changes for people who have high cholesterol and are at risk for heart disease. Xerova EZ 10/10 is especially helpful when diet alone is not enough to lower cholesterol.
Primary High Cholesterol: Xerova EZ 10/10 is used to lower total cholesterol, bad cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides, and other harmful fats while raising good cholesterol (HDL) in people with high cholesterol.
Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH): Xerova EZ 10/10 is also used to lower cholesterol in people with a rare genetic condition called HoFH, as an add-on to other treatments like LDL apheresis or if these treatments are unavailable.
Pharmacology
Atorvastatin: Xerova EZ 10/10 works by blocking an enzyme that helps the body make cholesterol, and Xerova EZ 10/10 also helps the liver remove bad cholesterol from the blood.
Ezetimibe: Xerova EZ 10/10 lowers cholesterol by preventing the body from absorbing cholesterol in the small intestine. This helps reduce the amount of cholesterol in the liver, leading to lower levels of cholesterol in the blood. Ezetimibe works alongside atorvastatin to help control cholesterol in a different way.
Dosage & Administration
The usual dose is between 10/10 mg and 80/20 mg daily. The starting dose is 10/10 mg or 20/10 mg daily. This can be taken once a day at any time, with or without food. For people who need a larger reduction in cholesterol, the starting dose may be 40/10 mg daily.
For patients with Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia: The recommended dose is 40/10 mg or 80/10 mg daily, alongside other cholesterol-lowering treatments if needed.
People with liver problems should not use this medicine. People with kidney problems may need closer monitoring while taking this medicine.
Interaction
Taking this medicine with certain drugs like fibric acid, niacin, cyclosporine, or certain antibiotics can increase the risk of muscle problems. Xerova EZ 10/10 should not be taken with certain other drugs like gemfibrozil or colchicine. If you’re on warfarin or other blood-thinners, your doctor will monitor your blood clotting levels closely.
Contraindications
Xerova EZ 10/10 is not recommended for people with active liver disease or unexplained high liver enzyme levels. Xerova EZ 10/10 should not be used by people who are allergic to any ingredient in the medicine.
Side Effects
Common side effects include muscle pain, liver enzyme changes, and stomach problems like pain or indigestion. Serious side effects like muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) are rare but can happen.
Pregnancy & Lactation
This medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Xerova EZ 10/10 can harm the baby, as cholesterol is important for normal development. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Precautions & Warnings
Be cautious if you have liver problems or a history of muscle issues. If you develop severe muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness, stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor. Your doctor may check your liver function and muscle health during treatment.
Overdose Effects
Taking too much of this medicine can cause symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or muscle weakness. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical help immediately.
Therapeutic Class
This medicine is a combination of a statin (atorvastatin) and a cholesterol absorption inhibitor (ezetimibe).
