Indications

Xidolac is used for short-term treatment of moderate to severe pain after surgery. Xidolac also helps with pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after eye surgery. Additionally, Xidolac can reduce eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies.

Pharmacology

Xidolac is a strong painkiller from the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) group. Xidolac works by blocking an enzyme that helps produce chemicals called prostaglandins, which are involved in inflammation and pain. Xidolac has a small effect on inflammation when used for pain relief.

Dosage & Administration

Tablet: The recommended dose is 10 mg every 4-6 hours. Xidolac should be used for a short time only (up to 7 days) and not for long-term use. A dose above 40 mg per day is not recommended.

Injection: Xidolac can be used as a single dose or multiple doses for moderate to severe pain after surgery. The injection is given over 15 seconds for IV and slowly into the muscle for IM. Pain relief usually starts within 30 minutes, with the strongest effect in 1 to 2 hours. The effect lasts for 4 to 6 hours.

Single-Dose Treatment:

  • IM Dosing (Adults): One dose of 60 mg for those under 65 years, 30 mg for those over 65, or with kidney issues or body weight less than 50 kg.
  • IV Dosing (Adults): One dose of 30 mg for those under 65 years, 15 mg for those over 65, or with kidney issues or body weight less than 50 kg.
  • IM Dosing (2 to 16 years): 1 mg per kg of body weight, up to 30 mg maximum.
  • IV Dosing (2 to 16 years): 0.5 mg per kg of body weight, up to 15 mg maximum.

Multiple-Dose Treatment: Patients under 65 years: 30 mg every 6 hours, not exceeding 120 mg per day. For patients over 65 years or with kidney problems, 15 mg every 6 hours, not exceeding 60 mg per day.

Switching from Injection to Tablet: When switching from injection to tablets, the combined daily dose (oral + injection) should not exceed 120 mg for younger adults or 60 mg for older patients. On the following days, oral doses should not exceed 40 mg per day. The combined treatment should not last more than 5 days.

Eye Drops: 1 drop in each eye 4 times a day.

Interaction

Xidolac may increase side effects when taken with other NSAIDs or aspirin. Xidolac can enhance the effects of blood thinners and reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications. Combining Xidolac with ACE inhibitors may increase the risk of kidney problems. Xidolac can also increase the toxicity of methotrexate.

Contraindications

Xidolac should not be used by people who are allergic to Xidolac or other NSAIDs. Xidolac is not recommended for children under 16 years of age, and should not be used as a painkiller before surgery.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach bleeding, ulcers, pancreatitis, anxiety, drowsiness, headaches, excessive thirst, fatigue, slow heart rate, high blood pressure, chest pain, infertility in females, and fluid buildup in the lungs.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The US FDA classifies Xidolac as a Category C drug for pregnancy. Xidolac should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the baby.
