Indications

Xiva is used to treat conditions like bronchial asthma, bronchospasm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component.

Pharmacology

Xiva is a new bronchodilator. Unlike Theophylline, Xiva has a dioxolane group in its structure. Xiva works by relaxing bronchial muscles and has a better safety profile. Xiva also inhibits platelet activation and reduces leukotriene production.

Dosage & Administration

Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily.

Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily or as directed by the physician.

Children:

>12 years of age: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily.

6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily. For example, if the body weight is 10 kg, 3 ml (60 mg) two times daily.

If the required daily dose is 400 mg, Doxophylline SR tablet should be taken once daily or as prescribed by the physician.

Interaction

Xiva should not be taken with other xanthine medications. Limit caffeine intake from food and drinks. Caution is needed when used with ephedrine or other similar drugs. Some drugs, like erythromycin, allopurinol, and others, may increase the drug’s effect, while smoking and other drugs like phenytoin may reduce Xiva. Dosage adjustments may be needed.

Contraindications

Xiva is not recommended for people who are allergic to the drug or other xanthine derivatives. Xiva is also not recommended for people with acute heart attacks, low blood pressure, or for breastfeeding mothers.

Side Effects

Some side effects may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, irritability, trouble sleeping, fast heartbeat, and trouble breathing. In rare cases, Xiva could cause high blood sugar or albumin in the urine. If overdosed, severe heart problems or seizures can occur. If side effects happen, the treatment may be stopped, but can be restarted at a lower dose after symptoms improve.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Animal tests have shown that Xiva does not affect the growth of babies before or after birth. However, there is not enough information about its safety during pregnancy, so Xiva should be used carefully. Xiva is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

People with liver disease, heart disease, lung disease, and other conditions should use Xiva carefully. Xiva should be monitored in patients with conditions like congestive heart failure as the drug stays in the body longer. Xiva is not addictive and does not cause dependence.

Overdose Effects

If an overdose occurs, severe heart problems or seizures may happen. There is no specific antidote, so treatment should focus on relieving symptoms. The drug may be restarted at a lower dose once symptoms of overdose are gone.

Therapeutic Class

Xiva is a bronchodilator and a methyl xanthine derivative.

Storage Conditions

Store in a dry place, away from light and heat. Keep out of children’s reach. Use only with a prescription from a specialist doctor.
