Indications
Xofluza 40 is used to treat acute influenza (flu) in people 12 years and older who have had symptoms for no more than 48 hours. Xofluza 40 works in patients who are otherwise healthy or are at high risk of flu complications. Xofluza 40 is also used to prevent flu in people 12 years and older who have been in close contact with someone who has the flu.
Pharmacology
Xofluza 40 is an antiviral medicine that works by stopping the flu virus from spreading in the body. The active ingredient is Baloxavir Marboxil, which is turned into the active drug Baloxavir once Xofluza 40 enters the body. This drug blocks a specific enzyme that the flu virus needs to copy itself, helping to prevent the virus from making more copies and spreading.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Take one dose of Baloxavir within 48 hours of having flu symptoms, with or without food. The dose depends on weight:
- If you weigh 40-80 kg: Take two 20 mg tablets (total 40 mg).
- If you weigh 80 kg or more: Take two 40 mg tablets (total 80 mg).
For Children: Xofluza 40 is safe and effective for children 12 years and older who weigh at least 40 kg.
Interaction
Xofluza 40 should not be taken with dairy products, calcium-fortified drinks, certain laxatives, antacids, or supplements like calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, or zinc. Xofluza 40 can also affect live flu vaccines.
Contraindications
Xofluza 40 should not be used by anyone who has had an allergic reaction to Baloxavir Marboxil or any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Some people may experience side effects like diarrhea (3%), bronchitis (3%), nausea (2%), sinusitis (2%), and headaches (1%).
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no well-controlled studies on Baloxavir Marboxil during pregnancy, so Xofluza 40 is not clear whether Xofluza 40 is safe. Flu during pregnancy can cause risks to both the mother and the baby. Xofluza 40 is also unknown whether Baloxavir passes into breast milk or its effects on a breastfeeding baby.
Precautions & Warnings
If you have an allergic reaction like swelling or hives, seek medical help right away. Serious bacterial infections can happen along with flu symptoms, but Baloxavir doesn’t prevent them. Make sure to treat any bacterial infections appropriately.
Overdose Effects
If you take too much Baloxavir, treatment involves general support, like monitoring vital signs, but there is no specific antidote.
Therapeutic Class
Xofluza 40 is used to treat respiratory viral infections like influenza (flu).
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep Xofluza 40 out of reach of children.
