Indications

Xonimide is used as an additional treatment for partial seizures in adults with epilepsy.

Pharmacology

Xonimide is not completely known how Xonimide works to stop seizures, but studies show Xonimide can help control them. Xonimide may affect sodium and calcium channels in the brain, which helps stabilize nerve activity. Xonimide also has some effect on neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. Xonimide works by blocking certain channels that can cause seizure activity, but its exact method is still being studied.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: Xonimide is usually taken once or twice a day in capsule form. The starting dose is 100 mg per day, which can be increased after two weeks. The dose can go up to 400 mg per day. Xonimide can be taken with or without food. The doctor will monitor your dose adjustments carefully.

Pediatric patients: Xonimide is not recommended for children under 16, as safety and effectiveness have not been established.

Contraindications

Xonimide is not recommended for people who are allergic to sulfonamides or zonisamide.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include drowsiness, loss of appetite, dizziness, trouble with coordination, and memory or concentration issues. If you experience any of these, speak to your doctor.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Xonimide. Xonimide may cause problems for the baby, such as metabolic acidosis. Xonimide has been shown to cause birth defects in animals.

Precautions & Warnings

Xonimide may cause drowsiness, especially at higher doses. Caution is needed if you have liver or kidney problems, as Xonimide is processed in the liver and eliminated by the kidneys.

Overdose Effects

Overdose can cause severe CNS symptoms like drowsiness, low blood pressure, and breathing problems. In case of overdose, immediate medical help is needed. Xonimide may be treated with supportive care and possibly dialysis if needed.
