Indications
Xtradex IV/IM is used to treat eye inflammation when there is a bacterial infection or the risk of infection. Xtradex IV/IM can also be used for eye inflammation after surgery or other infections in the eye.
Xtradex IV/IM is also used to treat ear infections with inflammation, like otitis externa, and acute and chronic otitis media. Xtradex IV/IM can also be used after ear surgery.
Pharmacology
Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid that works to reduce inflammation and allergies. Xtradex IV/IM is used in the treatment of eye inflammation. Xtradex IV/IM works by blocking an enzyme that helps produce inflammation-causing substances and prevents white blood cells from moving to the area of inflammation.
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that fights a variety of bacterial infections. Xtradex IV/IM works by interfering with an enzyme that is necessary for bacteria to make their DNA, stopping the bacteria from multiplying.
Dosage & Administration
For Eye: Place 1 drop into the affected eye every 4 to 6 hours. For the first 24 to 48 hours, you may increase the dosage to 1 drop every 2 hours.
For Ear: For acute otitis media in children with a tympanostomy tube, place 4 drops in the affected ear twice a day for 7 days. For acute otitis externa, use 4 drops in the affected ear twice a day for 7 days.
Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness have not been established for children under 1 year old.
Interaction
No specific drug interaction studies have been done with Ciprofloxacin and Dexamethasone for the eyes or ears. However, systemic use of some quinolones may raise blood levels of drugs like theophylline and caffeine, interfere with blood-thinning medication (warfarin), and affect kidney function in people using cyclosporine.
Contraindications
Xtradex IV/IM should not be used by people allergic to any ingredient in the product. Xtradex IV/IM should also be avoided by those with herpes simplex, other viral infections, fungal infections, glaucoma, and newborn babies.
Side Effects
For the Eyes: The most common side effects include a temporary burning or discomfort in the eyes. Other side effects may include stinging, redness, itching, or eye pain. Rarely, dizziness may occur. Steroid-related side effects can include increased eye pressure, potential glaucoma, cataracts, and delayed healing of wounds.
For the Ears: The most common side effects are ear discomfort and pain. Other side effects may include irritability, dizziness, or redness in the ear.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. This medication should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the baby.
Xtradex IV/IM is not known if this medicine is passed into breast milk. Caution should be used if Xtradex IV/IM is given to a nursing mother.
Precautions & Warnings
If used for a long time, there is a risk of fungal infections in the eye. Prolonged use of the steroid can lead to eye problems like glaucoma, optic nerve damage, cataracts, and high eye pressure. Xtradex IV/IM is important to monitor eye pressure regularly.

Storage Conditions
