Indications
Xyflo 4 is used for the prevention and treatment of asthma, to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), and to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis, both seasonal and perennial.
Pharmacology
Xyflo 4 is a medication that blocks the action of certain chemicals in the body called leukotrienes. These chemicals can cause inflammation in the airways, leading to symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis. By blocking them, Xyflo 4 helps reduce swelling and smooth muscle contraction in the airways, improving breathing.
Dosage & Administration
Adults & Adolescents (15 years and older): One 10 mg tablet once a day.
Pediatric patients (6-14 years): One 5 mg tablet once a day.
Pediatric patients (2-5 years): One 4 mg tablet once a day.
Pediatric patients (6 months to 5 years): One 4 mg oral granule once a day. This can be taken directly or mixed with a spoonful of cold water or soft food.
The medication is safe for children from 6 months to 14 years old, with similar effectiveness to adults.
Hepatic Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment is required for patients with mild to moderate liver problems.
Renal Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment is needed for kidney issues.
Elderly use: The dosage does not need to be adjusted for elderly patients, as their absorption and breakdown of the medicine are similar to younger adults.
Interaction
Xyflo 4 does not cause significant issues when taken with other asthma medications like theophylline, prednisone, or oral contraceptives. Xyflo 4 can be used with most commonly prescribed drugs without problems. However, Xyflo 4 may interact with drugs that speed up the breakdown of other medicines in the body, like phenobarbital, which could reduce its effectiveness.
Contraindications
Xyflo 4 should not be used by people who are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, and upper respiratory tract infections.
Less common effects may include anxiety, dizziness, dry mouth, and muscle pain.
Rarely, some people may experience more serious side effects like allergic reactions, memory loss, or suicidal thoughts.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Xyflo 4 should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary, as there are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Xyflo 4 can also pass into breast milk, so Xyflo 4 should be used with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Xyflo 4 is not intended to treat sudden asthma attacks. Patients should always have a rescue medication available. Xyflo 4 should not replace inhaled or oral corticosteroids, and should not be used alone for exercise-induced bronchospasm. People with aspirin sensitivity should continue to avoid aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while using this medication.
Overdose Effects
Overdose effects are usually mild and may include symptoms like stomach pain, sleepiness, thirst, headache, vomiting, and hyperactivity. In case of an overdose, usual medical care like removing the medicine from the stomach and monitoring the patient should be used.
Therapeutic Class
Xyflo 4 belongs to the class of leukotriene receptor antagonists.
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
